This is true. But I don’t believe EC’s need to “overdo” commemorating the Pope when the Eastern Churches only commemorated him once (and that by the Patriarch) when the church was undivided. The text in the Anthology states “holy universal Pontiff”
I don’t know why its more embarrassing to us. We do value our communion with the Pope. I think its appropriate, there’s probably more Roman Catholics anyway who are defiant of the Pope than Eastern Catholics.
Our UGCC has taken out the Second Antiphon etc. from the Liturgy in an attempt to . . . do what? Try to resemble the Latin Catholics with their shortened NO Mass?
If our Church is truly about Easternizing and returning to our Eastern traditions, the first thiing that should go is the papal commemoration “overkill.”
We EC’s aren’t defiant of the Pope on faith or morals. The UGCC does tend to go ahead and act as a patriarchal Church (which is what we are) with or without Rome’s prior approval.
As they say, it is always easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission!
