Commentaries and such

Hi all,

I’m looking for a few different things to “beef up” my study and knowledge of Scripture and Church history and the like. Ok, first thing I’m looking for is a good Orthodox Catholic Commentary (tobinatorstark: I have the Haydock Commentary and I love it but I have real trouble understanding it so I’m looking for another to supplement my Haydock Commentary. I only direct this towards you because I know you get fired up about the Douay-Rheims Bible and Haydock Commentary ). I was thinking about buying the commentary by Scott Haun. Right now I’m really focusing on the New Testament, especially the Gospels, I want to get Jesus’ life down so I can keep up with those Evengelicals when talking about the Bible, doctrines, etc. I’m open to any suggestions but I really want something Orthodox.

Next is going to be Bible Translations…dun dun dun…currently I have the Douay-Rheims and RSV-2CE. What do you guys think of those? I was a little dissapointed at the lack of notes in the RSV, but that could only be expected when I went from the Haydock Commentary to basically a reading Bible. I’m not looking for anything that is really extremely exact, I’d prefer something with a little more readability, but I don’t know…I’m relatively new to the whole reading the Bible concept (sad, I know) but I’m really trying hard nowadays. Ok, now I’m going to list a bunch of types of books I think I need too:

One saying how a Catholic should go about reading the Bible
One giving a detailed analyzation of each book of the Bible, kind of like an extremely extended preface
And one giving tips about how to study a Bible

Also, I think I read about a book that gave a little information about all of the heresies up to the Reformation.

This is a lot, I know, but I really am trying to be a good apologist and fast! Thanks!

There is a new edition of the Navarre Bible that combines all the New Testament books into one that I suspect would be excellent as far as an all inclusive study bible of the New Testament goes. A link to this edition is as follows:

I also use the DR Haydock but find it difficult in spots, so I tend to use the Jerusalem Bible a lot for study. The translation is weak in spots but overaly decent and has good notes and cross-refs. Look around at the EWTN bookstore and I am sure you will find a few other commentaries that will likely serve your purposes.

I would recommend the Navarre as well. This would a great addition to use with any Bible and the Haydock Commentary. It does benefit to use more than translation of a Bible or more than one Commentary
