I’m shopping for a Christmas gift for an Evangelical friend who probably wouldn’t appreciate something from a Catholic publisher. I seem to recall that InterVarsity Press came out within the past several years with a Scripture commentary drawing from the early Church Fathers. (Or maybe it was a collection of the writings of the early Fathers?)

Is anyone familiar with this? If so, is it written fairly, or are the translations/commentary/etc. biased? I seem to recall hearing at the time that it was pretty well done…

Many thanks!

That would be the perfect gift for that friend, since it will bring a needed awareness to ancient Christian writers to someone who is from a group who tends to ignore it and prefer ignorance of it! I am very familiar with the Ancient Christian Commentary and the Ancient Christian Texts series, they are good! I would recommend for that friend the volume on one of the epistles of Paul or even Revelation. That way the friend can get used to a catena style coomentary, and then maybe down the road you can introduce him to the best catena on the Gospels, the Catena Aurea! Or another option is the commentary on Paul’s letter by fourth century writer Ambrosiater, which is great edifying commentary.

Hi Copland,

Thanks for the quick feedback. I’ve been Googling around since my prior post, and have also run across a series from IVP by Christopher A. Hall – “Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers,” “Worshipping with the Church Fathers,” and “Learning Theology with the Church Fathers.” Those seem like a good potential gift, since I could afford all three (while the whole Ancient Christian Commentary series would be way out of my price range, and I’m a bit reluctant to give just a few parts).

Are you (or is anybody else) familar with Hall’s books?

Thanks!

No, not familiar with Hall’s books. I am familiar with the others I mentioned. You can buy individual volumes of the Ancient Christian Commentary, and they are very affordable.
