Tamir Rice. Sandra Bland. Laquan McDonald. Freddie Gray. These young black Americans, and many other men and women whose names never made national headlines, were recent victims of state violence. But they were also victims of deeper structural racial sins that go back to the founding of our country. Despite all the chatter, and hope, a few years ago about the prospect of a “post-racial” America, our awareness and response to these sins still painfully falls along racial lines.
We’ve failed to realize the “beloved community” envisioned by Martin Luther King Jr. and defined by Paul in his letter to the Galatians (3:28): “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” Too many Americans — particularly Christian Americans of my own generation — continue to worship at the altar of whiteness, defining themselves by their status as members of a temporary and illusory racial majority.
It has to end. And to begin building that beloved community, white Christians must start acting more Christian than white.

I believe some people are at fault for inciting racial problems…a certain person with the intitials A and S.

I don’t understand what they mean by “act less white and more christian”? I am pretty sure that soup kitchens and homeless shelters don’t say ‘no blacks allowed’…

Race relations weren’t this tense when Bush or even Clinton was president. Why has it been so different with Obama? Is this the “hope and change” he referred to? We still have fatherless homes in both communities, but sadly more in the african american community.

Its the A S person inciting violence against police officers…often ones that are innocent, like the one killed in my state while trying to apprehend a suspect.

Never mind–my original posting was as pointless as the point I was inquiring about.

Sorry – the OP lost me at "recent victims of state violence. The named victims were not killed by “the state;” they were killed by people who thought that their own lives were in danger at the time.

Inciting violence is NOT the Christian thing to do even if you put a REV. in front of your name. That only makes it even less Christian. God will be the judge in the end. God Bless, Memaw

All those listed were killed by police officers in the line of duty, acting as agents of the state rather than private individuals. Hence “state violence” is appropriate. There can certainly be justified state violence, just as there can be on an individual level, but in the cases cited that is in serious dispute.

Applying his same logic OJ wasn’t guilty. But yet despite the ridiculous criminal court ruling he was. The primary reason OJ got off was he had money. I think wealth is a far bigger determinate of how your interaction with the criminal justice system will go.
By 2040, that new America will be a majority-minority nation. On this score, I feel what King called “the fierce urgency of now.
Thank goodness. Then guys like him won’t be able to blame us Whites for all the ills of society. Except I think he still will.

Real easy for people living in white neighborhoods to think there is no problem. Sorry, there is. Try walking in the shoes of many African Americans in US cities.
Somebody said once, the most segregated time in America is Sunday morning.

Just as black Christians need to act more Christian than black. Etc.

Yes, our Christianity is indeed more important than our race, sex, nationality, whatever. .

But I find it strange that nobody is telling black Christians to 'act more Christian than black", Asian Christians to act more Christian than Asian,or female Christians to act more Christian than female, male Christians to act more Christian than male, ‘richer’ Christians to act more Christian than rich, ‘heterosexual’ Christians to act more Christian than heterosexual, ‘homosexual’ Christians to act more Christian than homosexual, and my all time favorite, asking LIBERAL Christians to act more Christian than Liberal and CONSERVATIVE Christians to act more Christian than Conservative.

How come it’s only ‘white’ --and BTW, it is ‘white non Hispanic’ ONLY that’s being targeted, or are our Latino and Latina members also part of this ‘white’ target’–who are apparently by virtue of their ‘white behavior’ (whatever that might be) in doing so NOT acting ‘Christian’ enough?

I understand what you are saying. Perhaps the writer of the article is referring to the type of people I have seen on Facebook. Waving a Bible and posting cool pictures of Jesus in one post, and later posting very hateful links and pictures in the others. Targeting Blacks, Muslims, even Catholics. The 'redneck, good ‘ol boy, ‘merica, heck yeah’’ mentality simply doesn’t mix will with Christianity.
Having worked once in what can be described as ‘the hood’, I saw first hand many of the hardships and discriminations of Black America. And those problems cannot easily be dodged.
I agree the article title is provocative, but underneath is a very real problem in this country.

Agreed. The damage done to the black family unit by the Great Society programs may be beyond repair, and the fact is that single parent units are always at greater risk of poverty.

Somehow, churches need to band together to overcome poverty, poor health care services, poor education systems. Government can’t or won’t fix it, as well as educate all Christians that when Christ says, *And the second is like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. *, He means all of God’s children.

Many of the hardships and discriminations faced are the result of choices made by Black America. White people cant fix that. Also, Blacks are just as guilty of racism as Whites. The only difference is they are never called out on it.

Rachel has my prayers, Pete.

I think if someone had written an article so blantantly racial in tone, reversing the races, there would be a cry for his firing, or worse.

Jon
Thank You !

I feel insulted by this article but I can’t articulate why.
