Comments on Redemptive Nature of Heat Wave

Hi, all,

It came to me the other morning, that the heat wave could serve to give all sinners a foretaste of their end, unless they repent. Subsequent to this, would be discussion about the creatures, human, animal and plant, who died because of the drought and because of heat exhaustion.

Just thought I’d bring this up.

Your thoughts are welcome.

I agree, until people go into their homes in 66 degree heat. I think it can give you a reminder that we need God (and water in that situation ;)). But you can think about this in a place with better/cooler weather too.

On a 100 degree Sunday, so as not to exhaust the parishioners, a pastor in a small church without air conditioning preached a 6-word sermon: “If you think this is hot . . .”
 
Good morning, all,

I thank all of you for your responses. Here in Texas, enduring more than 30 days of consecutive three digit Fahrenheit temperatures, with heat indexes around 108 a few times…

I am reminded that during my childhood here, we had a several year drought with hot temperatures and there was a joke about a cowboy who died and went to his reward. He walked along a barbed wire fence with a scorching sun beating down from a brassy sky onto the dry ground. He got to a ranch style gate, where an old bearded man in a dusty white robe tended the gate. He said, “You know, St. Peter, Heaven’s just like Texas.”
The old man replied, “Son, I ain’t St. Peter and you aren’t even where you think you are.”

Then, in the 1990’s, I was at a restruant here in Cowtown and this guy comes in with a T-Shirt that had a silhouette of Texas on the front and on the back the words, “If your’e real good and say say your prayers, when you die you’ll go to Texas.”

So here we have Texas on the one hand as hell and on the other as Heaven, so I submit it’s in-between and part of Purgatory. :rolleyes:

well SoTex was purgatory yesterday, 104 here, teens westward in the desert counties. did not go out there because was afraid I could not make it back, evening Mass took its toll. Just going out and getting in the car is a real test. But the chapel was full of elderly ladies, in Sunday dresses, who had come using their walkers from a group home a couple of blocks away.

I think it’s wonderful, the acts of faith seen in times of duress.

Thank you, for bringing this thread back toward the serious nature I meant for it.

Yes, it was 104F yesterday and we’re due for 108F, with heat index around 113F in the metroplex today.

It serves as a nice metaphor for making descriptions of hell more tangible. A trip to AZ in the summer does the same. Though if said sinners are familiar with predictions on global climate change that would compete with interpreting the heat as a message.

It’s been pretty hot where I am, but it has been raining almost every day.

It is my gallows humor showing. 🙂 You speak of the pretty gruesome death of humans and animals, due to dehydration (sunstroke) and then mention God’s love for all. In my eyes these two simply do not go together.

I think all tragedies can have the effect of shaking us from a complacent slumber caused by the easy life or the deceitful sense of self-sufficiency.

Oh, now I understand.

The thing is, I submit that God’s love takes the results of people’s sins (the heat wave), and gives those evil results a redemptive nature, if people want to see that. Our heat wave was broken after its fortieth day, a Biblical number. So, I’ll stand with the meaning of the OP. 🙂

You say: “IF people want to see that”… but what about the animals “who” cannot see that? They just suffer… and dying of a heat-stroke (which is what Jesus supposedly HAD to endure) is far from fun. Why expose the animals to such fate? They were truly innocent… they do not deserve a fate like that. A good, benevolent God would not allow the suffering of innocents, would he? And the laws of nature cannot stand up against God’s will, can they?

Hi, Spock,

Thanks for posting. This is one of the things I wanted to discuss, to sort out my own feelings on it. A just God, does allow the consequences of sin to sinners who don’t repent, and which sin pollutes nature as much as society, and which sin thus causes nature to produce a heat wave which kills innocent animals and plants. Or allows nature to produce a coastal earthquake which in turn produces a tsunami; Or allows volcanoes to erupt, hurricanes, huge land storms, etc.
I worry about stray dogs and cats, and squirrels, racoons and all the other wildlife we have in our city, where they will find water. I don’t have a large shallow bowl to put in my back yard, so that what ever creatures go through there may find water. I thought of using a three gallon cooking pot I have, that was the yard dog’s water pan.
Back to the topic, I believe that God is just in allowing this, so that people can see and learn the results of their sin, come to remorse and repent their sins, to break the cycle.

I just look for God’s good in the results of people’s sins. Because, I believe that:
God is love
And God’s love
Is good love.

No, sin does not necessarily pollute nature or society. This is a generalization on your part, which you should re-think. No “sin” can cause a meteor strike (for example). And, of course we have a fundamental disagreement about “what is sin”.

Looks like we have a fundamental disagreement about the concept of “just”, too. A “just God”, who has power over his creation would only allow the “sinners” to be affected by their actions, but never innocent bystanders. To allow others to suffer - IF you have power to prevent it - is as unjust and cruel and unloving as can be.

This is the first time I woke up early enough to go online with the cool of the morning.

Well, I still believe that sin blocks the grace of God from specific parts of nature. And, that without that grace, sin abounds. This applies to the whole planet and spatial bodies, too, my belief system.

The faithful will accept God’s chastisements and benefit by them, so God remains just to chastise unrepentant and repentant sinners alike. I’ve been in band and military: goof offs can foul it up for everybody. People out of line can hurt the whole band or military unit, so all suffer from the out of line person. The idea of chastising all brings peer pressure to bear on the out of line person/people because of the trouble they bring on the organization or community. What’s wrong with the world, especially America, is that we no longer have Christian peer pressure, imho.
