My point is that other mature people don’t see it as a problem. My boyfriend and I watched it last night and we both marveled at how powerful the women were and their talent. My boyfriend is mature enough not to tantilize women on TV or other media.
Interesting that you consider acceptance of immodesty a matter of maturity. I see it more as a matter of being spiritually IMmature.

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

If anyone watched the women swimmers you’ll recall that they had very modest suits: one piece suits with spandex shorts. So what’s the deal with the skimpy bikinis for the beach volleyball? I worked as a Navy helicopter mechanic fully-clothed in the roaring hot middle east and I didn’t die. So what’s the excuse for such Woman-Of-the-Night outfits at the Olympics??? It’s an absolute shame and a scam and I feel sorry for the women forced to wear such clothing. ***We are better then that. ** *

You guys would have been really offended if you had viewed the original Olympics, when they performed naked.

I just could not get into the Olympics this year, so I have not watched any of them. Anyone else feel this way?
Same here. The Olympics just aren’t the same since they allowed professionals to participate. Living near Philadelphia I know much about the goings-on of Alan Iverson. Having someone like him represent the US is a bit unsettling to me. Although many athletes have sacrificed much to be there, the professionals just don’t make the grade for me.

No one’s mentioned the kicker on the women’s beach volleyball issue–they were protesting having cheerleaders there in skimpy outfits. From the brief shot I saw of the cheerleaders, they are actually wearing a touch more clothing!

It is my, and my husband, opinion that the beach volleyball women are purposely wearing the sexy clothing. There are plenty of other options available to them–just look at the other sports! They are choosing to wear the revealing bottoms which they constantly have to adjust, and honestly, in the sand, you’d think it isn’t all that comfortable. As for the top–there are spaghetti straps on it. There’s no clothing reason why spaghetti straps are needed–it’s purely a stylistic choice to make the outfit more sexy. That’s so not necessary!

On a different topic, has anyone heard how the Pakinstani women’s swimmer ended up doing? Due to the now-allowed full body suits, she was able to swim and not violate her religious convictions (Muslim, I think) about showing any skin. It’s a shame NBC didn’t follow up on that one! (I guess they are too busy showing more beach volleyball!)

It’s not only the female beach volleyball players. Have you seen what the female runners are wearing?

Yes, I know it’s hot. So what? If divers and swimmers can wear one piece bathing suits, the runners and beach volleyball players can wear clothing that is decent and not showing expanses of skin.

And, don’t tell me that they have no choice in the matter. We all have choices. The National Olympic Committee usually negotiates with a Big Brand Name sportswear manufacturer for what gear is needed for the entire National Team. They most definitely have a say in what they will accept. I know, I was privy to that information when I was Treasurer of my National Olympic Committee.

The whole NOC discussed what was being offered, and decided what would be accepted, and what not. It only takes one person to address the question of what is decent and what is not acceptable.

Runners? Like the sprinters or the long distance runners? Either way, its mostly about aerodynamics. It cuts back on wind resisitence for the sprinters.

As for long distance runners, as someone who ran a marathon a few years ago, I can honestly say, you pee yourself when you run. You also are sweating a ridiculous amount, and wearing a sweat suit is not only completely ill concieved but also dangerous.

My point was . . . if the male beach volley ball teams can play just fine in shorts and shirts, why can’t the women?

If the men were wearing their speedos because it’s aerodynamic or whatever, then fine, make a case for the women to wear something similar.

But the men aren’t even wearing bathing suits!!

I agree that the women beach volleyball players have various options regarding their clothing.

I also have options. My cable TV has 300 channels, and my remote control can turn the TV on and off. I can also use it to change channels without even leaving the couch.

So, how long did the folks objecting to the bikinis watch?

No one is saying that runners - whethers sprinters or long distance - should wear sweat suits. Please do not exaggerate. There is very suitable clothing available that is aerodynamic and also covers the torso so that they are not letting it all hang out. What is being worn is disgraceful. There is absolutely no need for tiny pieces of underwear - which is what it does look like.

Joan, you run 26.3 miles in under 3 hours and we’ll talk about how much clothing you wish to wear.

Why on earth do you pee yourself when you run???

Does anyone have a link about that Pakastani woman?

I have another objection to the uniforms which have little to do with lust.

I overlooked the Sports Illustrated Swim Issue but was always upset at how few times women athletes made the cover. Someone joked the last time a female athlete made the cover…she was a horse… 😛

Women have worked long and hard to be taken seriously as athletes…training and sacrificing just as much as the men. …and then poof. The people on the locale news were joking about why they were really turning on the Olympics and it wasn’t for the runaway gold medal softball team.

That bothers me a lot…and I wonder why women go out of their way to set things back?

Why on earth do you pee yourself when you run???
A) Because you don’t stop to pee cause it takes too long
B) Your kidneys and excretory systems are on overdrive trying to keep you cool, so your body is processing any water in your body and to do that it has to eliminate waste products, and it’s wicked hard to run when you have to pee, with no place to go in sight, (Kinda like when your on a road trip, and you think you can make it to the next rest stop, but 2 miles after you pass the last one your squimring in the seat)
C) Breaking stride can mess you up wicked bad
D) You just don’t care at that point

I wasn’t concerned with how cute I was looking by like mile 5. I was praying for death. The finish line was pretty cool though, you get wrapped in space age tin foil and get to lie down on a bus. And they feed you, and some races you get things as like a congrats for finishing.
I know at the Boston Marathon (which I’m not ballsy enough to do) you get free Nike sneakers and a track suit and t shirts and a bunch of other random stuff. I’ve walked the marathon route, but seriously heart break hill is hard walking I’d keel over and die running it. Also, I took up smoking again, and I would pass out by the third mile…

My wife and I also have been talking about how innappropriate the female beach volleyball players attire is. It clearly is aimed at sex appeal, which is not what the Olympics is about , IMO.

The points made above re: the male beach vollyeball players mirror our viewpoints exactly: If they can play successfully in modest clothing, why can’t the women!

An intersting side note, the Drew Mariani(sp) show on Releveant Radio had a segment on this very topic last week. He also noted that apparently between the matches, women dressed in bikinis come out to dance and entertain the crowd. Clearly this “sport” is primarily about promoting sex appeal.

In response to beach volleyball. (I am a guy)

I watched for less than 3 seconds give or take a second.

Yes, if men can wear shorts so can women.

I think that even tight fitting cloths like the swimmers wear are modest enough for that activity.

If a man does not find those volleyball players a distraction then he is either a Saint already (God Bless him)

Or something’s are not working right.

Our Lord was here, however, and changed the world. The meaning and nature of propiety and modesty, for example, is part of Christian culture. One commentator (1) has observed that ‘Catholic morals don’t miraculously change with the times; that which offends modesty in the last century offends modesty today’. That’s a very inexact quote. The problem with the gymnastics, volley ball, runners, and other sport costumes is that they destroy modesty and emphasize mechanical efficiency. In the past the Church was not silent on these issues.

So, how long did the folks objecting to the bikinis watch?
Between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds. Only when it was displayed on the news–I did not ask to see any of it. I also averted my eyes whenever the gymnasts or runners were on the news or when someone with the remote put the channel to that one. Even to watch is to accept the denial of our nature and to accede to the elevation of efficiency as a guiding principle of how we should interact and what we should show each other. I saw very little of the Olympics because it was readily apparent to me that the entire thing is totally shot through with fleshy displays. While I was averting my eyes, when someone had the Olympics tuned in, I heard the commentator describing a female dive in exquisite detail, in re the position of her body and body parts. There just is no sense of our purpose and our nature and our destiny. There is no meaningful sense in which Christianity has sancitified sport, at this point in history. And the new Vatican initiative seems very bland.
