Commitment to God

In past years ago, and have read: " God does not demand me to be perfect in order to follow Jesus, He only asks for the willingness and commitment to obey him".

Here’s where I get confused, … Why? If I am committed to and willing to obey; How can I live with the spirit of God if I am not perfect?
 
Perfection cannot be achieved by by us imperfect (tainted by original sin) beings, only Jesus is perfect.
But this reminds me of a quote from Vince Lombardi:

“Gentleman, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good”

Fr. Richard Heilman turned me onto this quote & I think it answers your question “perfectly” (pun intended)😛
