Depends on what your calling in life is.

In general, I believe marriage (one man, one woman, sacramentally joined by God) is good. I believe that is how God designed it. I definitely consider my marriage to be good - my husband is a true blessing to me from God. 👍

But I obviously don’t believe every person is called to a married life. A single (unmarried) vocation can be just as good/rewarding/pleasing to God. 🙂
So are there cases where you believe marriage is bad?

So are there cases where you believe marriage is bad?
Not necessarily the institution of marriage, but there are some people who don’t properly discern marriage and all that it entails and don’t make a prayerful discernment of who to marry. They are more caught up in the sexual/financial/social/… aspects of the relationship rather than discerning if this person is who I want to spend my life with and will this person bring me closer to God and vice versa. Spouses are supposed to help each other get to Heaven.

I think that’s probably why the divorce rate is so high. People don’t consider what marriage means and feel that “oh well, if it doesn’t work, I’ll just get a divorce and find someone else” or they go to the other extreme and engage in cohabitation where they “play” at being married without the commitment. Either situation is wrong.

I believe marriage is a life-long commitment and that the decision to get married should not be taken lightly and should only be entered into after careful, prayerful discernment. Even then, Satan still works to divide families and create strife, which is why a husband and wife need to work together to keep their marriage strong.

I can only speak for Catholics, but I’ve included part of a traditional Catholic wedding where the bride and groom pledge their love and fidelity to each other. (“forsaking all others”). My own wedding Mass was one time I truly felt the blessings of the Holy Spirit and in my heart I know that God blessed my marriage.
Priest: “Do you take ___ as your lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish until death do you part?”
Bride/Groom: “I do” Bride/Groom: “I take this ring as a sign of my love and faithfulness in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit.” "
The verbal exchange of Catholic wedding vows between the bride and groom are actually spread out over the middle three rites in a sixteen-step process. These three are: The Nupitals, the Solemn Promise, and the Blessing and Exchange of Rings.
During the rite of the Nupitals, the priest asks the bride and groom individually if they have come of their own free will to give themselves to the other in marriage. He then asks if they will honor and love one another as husband and wife for the rest of their lives, and if they will accept children from God lovingly and bring them up according to the law of Christ and his Church. The couple answers each question in the affirmative.
For the Solemn Promise, the priest asks the couple to join their right hands and declare their consent before God and the Church. They then take their wedding vows after which the priest blesses them, joins them together in marriage, and recites a second blessing: “May the Lord in His goodness strengthen your consent and fill you both with His blessings. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”
The priest then blesses the wedding rings as symbols of deep faith and peace, and the bride and groom exchange them with a promise of unconditional love and fidelity.
There are many other details of the ceremony, but as with any tradition, the spoken promises between the betrothed couple are the heart, soul and essence of the Catholic wedding ceremony.

Sorry for being long-winded. Not sure if that’s the kind of answer you’re looking for. ??? 🙂

Also, am I to conclude from your explanation that Muhammad only had sex with women that he married first - he did not engage in sexual relations with anyone outside the bond of matrimony and that only for him was the rule changed to allow for more than 4 wives?
entirely the polygamy was unlimited in the society , islam limited it to 4
(BTW, just for clarification, I don’t believe that any of this is actually from God - I truly believe He made marriage between one man and one woman.
As Jesus said:
“But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore now they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” Mark 10:9
although i can’t see any prohibition in this verse for polygamy , but it’s your beliefs and i respect it
This completely negates Muhammad’s claim of polygamy (and divorce) as being from God because it contradicts Jesus’ words. And we all know that true prophets are not supposed to contradict previous Scripture. 😉 )
i follow the same beliefs of abraham (pbuh) and most of prophets of God regarding polygamy issue , can you deny ?
can i say that it was jesus (pbuh) who contradicted previous scripture !!!
anyway , as i said before , i don’t see prohibition of polygamy in your verse , your verse not talking about polygamy , it just talking aboout the relation between spouses in general
But I appreciate you taking the time to explain the view of Islam. 🙂
me too , it was very objective discussion , and i’m happy for ending it politely .
thank you 🙂

But just to clarify, the Quranic verse refers only to marriage to captive women and not sexual relations with them? A man who already has 4 wives is forbidden to engage in sexual relations with a captive woman who is not his legal wife?

Two become one. Not 3 or 4 become 1.

Jesus corrected the practices of previous people. I don’t believe He contradicted any scriptures that prescribed polygamy. Can you show me any previous scriptures that speak of polygamy being ordained by God? The practices of previous people, including prophets does not mean they are following God’s law - they are all human and, as such, are subject to human weakness and failures.

:blessyou:

yes , this is my understanding
“But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore now they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” Mark 10:9
Two become one. Not 3 or 4 become 1.
they will become one in pairs
polygamy will not prevent man to become one with each wife he have
jesus (pbuh) not talking about polygamy , he is talking about how the relation between spouses should to be

in christianity , prophets not necessery to following God’s law , may be they rap thier daughters but still prophets from God and people of guidence to thier nation 🤷

this is one of the points i denying the bible for

anyway , did the bible clarified thier actions to be sin , or did jesus (pbuh) condemn those previous prophets for thier polygamy ?

yes , this is my understanding
OK. Thank you. 🙂

Wife, singular. Not wives, plural.

Maybe men have a different view of polygamy because they are the ones who are able to have sexual relations with multiple women, but as a woman and a wife, I expect my husband to be faithful to only me - he vowed to me and to God that he would forsake all others (please see my previous post about wedding vows.)

Most men don’t approve of polyandry (women having multiple husbands), and they usually cite the issue of children and parentage, however I suspect that most men would still experience jealousy and other negative emotions if a wife who is unable to have children would engage in such a practice.

I also don’t believe God dictated in any scriptures that polygamy was to be practiced. I believe He tolerated it, just as He tolerated divorce during the time of Moses, but Jesus clarified that it was not that way from the beginning.
in christianity , prophets not necessery to following God’s law , may be they rap thier daughters but still prophets from God and people of guidence to thier nation 🤷
I have no idea what this means or what you are talking about. I believe God’s prophets are holy men in terms of delivering God’s message, but that does not make them infallible in their own lives. Only God is perfect.
this is one of the points i denying the bible for
What point?
anyway , did the bible clarified thier actions to be sin , or did jesus (pbuh) condemn those previous prophets for thier polygamy ?
I don’t know that Jesus ever specifically mentioned the word polygamy. The verse given to you above that clearly states “wife” not “wives”.

Jesus also said:
“You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that anyone who so much as looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his heart”.

I think the case can be made that if a man is already married to one woman, if he is looking at another woman with a similar intent (marriage and the marital intimacy that it entails) is committing adultery.

There were also OT figures that were monogamous. (Noah, Isaac, Job) Why do Muslims choose to follow the practices of some and not others? 🤷

Again, I don’t believe there is a specific scripture where God ordained polygamy and delivered this message to His people.

OK. Thank you. 🙂
“But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore now they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” Mark 10:9

Wife, singular. Not wives, plural.
yes , wife is singular not plural , do you know why ?
from the entire context of these verse , you will notice that Jesus was approached with a question about whether or not it is allowed for a man to divorce his wife

Jesus immediately referred to the Old Testament for the answer in . He referred to Adam and Eve, one man and one woman. The Old Testament does talk about the story of Adam and Eve as one husband and one wife.

.
2 Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife. 3 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 “But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7 “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, 8 AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”
10 In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

read Matthew 19:3-12 as well

i think it’s more clear now what jesus is talking about , it’s all about devorce not the number of wives .
but again i have no problems if you want to understand it in your way , but my understanding make sense either , do you deny ?

do you have any other verses supporting your beliefs that jesus (pbuh) prohibited polygamy
Maybe men have a different view of polygamy because they are the ones who are able to have sexual relations with multiple women, but as a woman and a wife, I expect my husband to be faithful to only me - he vowed to me and to God that he would forsake all others (please see my previous post about wedding vows.)
i understand your situation , and i believe that most of women have the same emotions , i myself will never think about marrying more than one , the point is that it’s just allowable not obligatory , and believe me , in some societies women find it okey for her husband to marry other women , not all women have the same culture of you , do you agree ?
Most men don’t approve of polyandry (women having multiple husbands), and they usually cite the issue of children and parentage, however I suspect that most men would still experience jealousy and other negative emotions if a wife who is unable to have children would engage in such a practice.
are you ready to make rational and objective discussion about the wisdom of allowing the man to marry more than one and not allowing the women to have more than one husband
I have no idea what this means or what you are talking about. I believe God’s prophets are holy men in terms of delivering God’s message, but that does not make them infallible in their own lives. Only God is perfect.
i am either believe that prophets of God are not infallible
but did you read the kind of sins which attributed to them in the bible , do you know that when i read it i consider myself more rightious than them
read it again and tell me is that behaviours of prophets chosen by God to transmit his massage and to teach them thier religion ? and why it was written in the bible anyway , is there repentence mentioned in the bible ? , is the condemnation of God to them mentioned in the bible , is anger of God for thiere action be decleared in the bible ?
I don’t know that Jesus ever specifically mentioned the word polygamy. The verse given to you above that clearly states “wife” not “wives”.
yes , jesus ever specifically mentioned the word polygamy , then why you says that he prohibited it 😃
Jesus also said:
“You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that anyone who so much as looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his heart”.
i’m not talking about adultery , i’m talking about polygamy

read the verse you refere to again , you will notice that he is talking about divorce , he says that if a man divorce his wife without reasons but to marry another woman then he commit adultery
in polygamy , the man dosn’t divorce his first wife
There were also OT figures that were monogamous. (Noah, Isaac, Job) Why do Muslims choose to follow the practices of some and not others? 🤷
we follow the quran , not specific prophets
there is no problem in islam if we were monogamous , beside it’s allowable for men under some conditions to marry more than one
most muslims are monogamous while mohammed (pbuh) was polygamy , there is no problems at all , it’s not obligatory to be polygamy
Again, I don’t believe there is a specific scripture where God ordained polygamy and delivered this message to His people.
beside there is no specific scripture where God prohibited it though it was widly practised by societies and by prophets themselfs 🙂

but again i have no problems if you want to understand it in your way , but my understanding make sense either , do you deny ?
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. 🙂
do you have any other verses supporting your beliefs that jesus (pbuh) prohibited polygamy

True. There are men and women who think cohabitation is acceptable, pornography is acceptable, wife-swapping/swinging is acceptable etc. Obviously I don’t get it. :o

I’m sure there are many websites that will quote scripture to support polygamy as well as other behaviors that they want to deem as acceptable. There’s a famous quote that “the devil can cite scripture for his purpose” (William Shakespeare)
are you ready to make rational and objective discussion about the wisdom of allowing the man to marry more than one and not allowing the women to have more than one husband
No. I don’t believe there is any wisdom in this practice for either men or women.
i am either believe that prophets of God are not infallible
but did you read the kind of sins which attributed to them in the bible , do you know that when i read it i consider myself more rightious than them

Personally, I believe that the sins of men are written in the Bible to teach all of us that we are all fallible, but that God’s mercy will redeem us and that no matter what God still loves us. That doesn’t diminish the message of God delivered through these men in any way. God then sent Jesus to us who* is *infallible and delivered His message. That is part of why I could never believe Muhammad is a man of God - because I don’t believe God would send Jesus who is perfect, sinless and infallible and then later send Muhammad who objectively was anything but, and with a message that contradicts Jesus.

I don’t consider myself more righteous than anyone, Bible figure or not - I may not commit the same sins as others, but I am a sinner and as such am in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness. All sin is offensive to God.

Repentence and God’s mercy is mentioned all over the Bible. It is all part of Jesus’ ministry.
Jesus said: “I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17
i’m not talking about adultery , i’m talking about polygamy
But if polygamy is not acceptable in God’s eyes, then the man is committing adultery with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th ‘wives’

Like I said, we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this subject. No one will ever be able to convince me that polygamy is an acceptable practice and ordained by God. Those who think it’s OK are free to practice it as well. Each of us has to answer for what we do in life.

Thank you for a respectful dialogue, elwill. May God bless you and your family. 🙂

i think that we exchanged our views regarding the issue of slaves and polygamy , i have nothing to add actually
but i appreciate the discussion with you , thank you
and feel free if you have other questions which muslims can’t answer 🙂

In the case when a woman marries a man, out of love and hoping that he will be solely dedicate his love for her, but in the long run, the man finds another woman attractive and wanting to marry her, since he is not suggested in Muslim to refrain any sexual shallow desire, but instead to find a legal way to make it acceptable, in the case when first wife can’t accept, while polygamy is not forbidden, what do you suggest? The first wife seeks to divorce, that will make her a not good wife? But to continue to accept her husband’s plan will make sure that she will live a desperate life. What say you?

she is free to seeks to divorce , and she is free to accept her husband plan 🙂

Well, but in this case the husband doesn’t want to free her or divorce her, he wants to keep her …because Islam allows men to polygamy…
From all I can see, Islam just seeks the benefit for men while putting women just as property.
You don’t have to defend that Islam is more true or just in this case. After all you will just find anything to justify it. I’m just observing and find my own conclusion, others who read this, if they were sort of unbiased judge, they can come with their own conclusion that there are people who will blind their eyes for the sake of honoring a dogma.
🙂

actually when i said that she is free to seek the divorce i meant to say that she have the right to divorce even if heris husband want to keep her

let us consider the christianity in exactly the same case to be fair

In the case when a woman marries a man, out of love and hoping that he will be solely dedicate his love for her, but in the long run, the man finds another woman attractive and wanting to marry her, since he is not suggested in christianity to divorce or marry another woman which means that he have no chance to correct his wrong choice ,but to cheated or betrayed his wife

what do you suggest if this woman can’t divorce ?
i suggest that she have only two choices , whether to accept the behaviour of her husband and live with him while he cheating her or to do the same by betraying her husband either

since he is not suggested in christianity to divorce or marry another woman which means that he have no chance to correct his wrong choice ,but to cheated or betrayed his wife
Are you saying that by accepting the husband to remarry (even for 4 times!) that will somehow eventually enable him to see that what he’s doing is unjust or wrong? what logic is applied here?

Of course in Catholic this kind of man will have to discern whether his desire for this woman is worth a pursue, worth the soul of himself and his entire family. He will have to seek deep down to his heart whether this is true, and of course the church will tell that it’s an evil thought of abandoning family’s for the sake of temporary satisfaction…and I don’t think any Catholic man will ever consider such thing in the first place, I think all catholic men accept the teaching, and if they ever think of looking at someone with desire, they know they are in the brink of violating truth. That’s the difference with Islam, who will never think it as sin. Cheating or betraying wife is not the answer even though that it could happen for human being, they’re sinners, but at the end, they have to see that it’s not “worth” the soul safety at the end.
actually when i said that she is free to seek the divorce i meant to say that she have the right to divorce even if heris husband want to keep her
Yup…but what’s the case for this woman to bring up to your judge since the husband deny all this supposed “right”? He’s entitled to keep his wife right since he’s entitled to poligamy?
Case like this happens a lot in Indonesia. It’s truly tragic since men are not taught to think that their desires are wrong in the first place. Or even that they knew deep down it’s wrong, somebody from Koran says it’s acceptable.

BTW, I happen to find this article:
men.webmd.com/news/20090429/
jech.bmj.com/cgi/content/short/jech
it tells that certain amount of drinking alcohol, preferably wine, actually lengthen the life span of people for at least 5 years…😉
am i need to know that from you ? we allready knows from allah that the wine have some profits either

2-219 - They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say in them is great sin, and some profit for men;** but the sin is greater than the profit **, they ask thee how much they are to spend, say: what is beyond your needs. thus doth God make clear to you his signs: in order that ye may consider

sin in the arabic context of this verse means harm

So your “Allah” is one who doesn’t trust human being can mature to know how to differentiate the condition of being enslaved by drink and the condition of free from those enslavement but have all the control towards it. 😉

Are you saying that by accepting the husband to remarry (even for 4 times!) that will somehow eventually enable him to see that what he’s doing is unjust or wrong? what logic is applied here?
some people find it just and logic , actually it was the norm and custom within jews and arabs and prophets to marry unlimitted numbers of women , actualy islam did favour to them by limitted it to just 4

in the fact , polygamy sometimes solve problems and that’s why it wasn’t prohibited , you just don’t see the positives , your view about this issue is very narrow , and the intensions of men when they rise this issue is to critices islam not more than that

i agree with you , i didn’t say that cheating your wife is acceptable in christianity , i just point to the consequences of such laws in christianity

i was talking about the situation of christian women when her husband love another woman comparison with muslim women when her husband love another
the only difference is that the first one will hurt his wife by adultery and the second man will hurt her wife by another marriage
i’m talking about the point of view of this woman because you said
You don’t have to defend that Islam is more true or just in this case
yet you didn’t answer me
what is your suggestions , if christian wife knew that her husband love another women ? how christianity was just to her

as for islam , she have the righs to seek divorce , what about christianity ?
That’s the difference with Islam, who will never think it as sin. Cheating or betraying wife is not the answer even though that it could happen for human being, they’re sinners, but at the end, they have to see that it’s not “worth” the soul safety at the end.
but by the dealing of christianity with such case , there’s no another way for those men but adultery , you have just one chance to choose your wife and if your choice was wrong , then there is no solutions no chances

in islam , you have no excuses to commit adultery while you married , that’s why the punishment in this case is the death
beside taking another wife is more complex and more hard upon muslim husband than christian husband who will commit adulery then live his life without any guilt as for jesus allready forgave him
Yup…but what’s the case for this woman to bring up to your judge since the husband deny all this supposed “right”? He’s entitled to keep his wife right since he’s entitled to poligamy?
in some cases she have the rights to get divorced by the court , and marriage of another woman is acceptable reason

anyway , rightious muslims will not ever impose his wife to live with him

allah said in quran
2-231 - When ye divorce women and they fulfil the term of their (Iddat), either take them back on equitable terms or set them free on equitable terms; but don’t take them back to injure them, (or) to take undue advantage; if any one does that he wrongs his own soul. do not treat God’s signs as a jest, but solemnly rehearse God’s favours on you, and the fact that he sent down to you the book and wisdom, for your instruction. and fear God, and know that God is well acquainted with all things.

So your “Allah” is one who doesn’t trust human being can mature to know how to differentiate the condition of being enslaved by drink and the condition of free from those enslavement but have all the control towards it. 😉
do you wanna to say that god of christianity trusted in his followers !!
i hope that christians are worthy for his trust 👍

anyway , allah just warn us , so that we will have no excuses in judgement day
in islam there is no problem if we used alcohol for it’s benefits as in medication for example

90 - Ye who believe intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination, of Satan’s handiwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper.

91 - Satan’s plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of God, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?

Its funny how Muslims love to debate but they still cant answer the most common questions.

Where was Islam before Mohamed and

prove to me the Bible and Christianity got corrupted over time.
