Commuion cross blessing?

Hi since I can’t receive commuion I sit in my seat but in other church’s people cross themselfs to be blessed , today there was two stand in preists I saw a boy cross himself and he got blessed but the usual preist doesn’t say you can come up for a blessing and the other preists from another church didnt say it but people knew anyway ?
Can anyone help me out ? Thanks
 
Yes, use the search engine for “Blessings in the Communion line”
 
Better advice would be ’ ask the priest’, as you would be helped by having him know of your existence anyway, and it would give you a reason to approach him.

Chuck, there is a conflict on these boards. Some point out, quite correctly, that Rome has asked priests not to give blessings in the communion line.

Others point out, again quite correctly, that many priests say quite clearly that non-Catholics are very welcome to come for a blessing, and sometimes RCIA candidates are actually taught to do so.

It is also said at some point Rome announced that the practice was under review. So some have concluded that the prohibition might be lifted anyway eventually as so many parishes do it and say it is helpful pastorally.
 
I agree. Given that the practice seems so widespread,and Rome is aware of it, I don’t understand why a decision can’t be announced.
 
Oh dear. We’ve been going up for a blessing each time, mostly because I have my children and I didn’t want them to feel uncomfortable staying in the seat. The youth director at the parish told me that we could go up for a blessing, and the priest tells me thank you each time I go up, haha. So…I guess its ok for me to keep going? Now I feel bad, like maybe we should just stay seated. :eek:
 
I know around here young children will receive a blessing at the altar while a parent receives communion.

As far as an adult going to the communion rail for a blessing only I would say forget about that. Make a spiritual communion and be grateful for the grace and blessing you receive for attending mass.

It is forbidden to be in the Communion line just to receive a blessing and there is no need anyway as the priest gives everyone a blessing at the end of the Mass.
Unfortunately there are some misinformed people who go up and basically confront the priest by standing before him. In order not to cause scandal by telling these people to go and sit down he will likely bless them but they should not be up there.

Catholics in a state of mortal sin and non-Catholics must remain in their seats while Communion is being distributed. You may only be in the Communion line to receive Communion.

But I wish that you would believe the many of us when we say that in our parishes, people are specifically invited to go forward. They are not forcing themselves on the priest. In effect. they are being told to gpo forward for a blessing.

Elizium, your post dates from 2008. That was the answer back then.

It doesn’t relate to the issue now, that the practice is widespread, and the feeling is that it is being considered by Rome and might be changed so many priests are happy to anticipate the outcome.

No. The answer from 2008 (only 3 years ago) is the same answer as now, unless Rome has spoken again on the topic. It was just as widespread then as it is now because people have ignored Rome.

But aren’t we blessed at the end of Mass anyway?
 
I am curious why this is an issue in the first place? I am unaware. Why would recieving a blessing be an issue?

That is because one goes to the altar rail or gets into the communion line to receive communion; all others can make a spiritual communion. I could also imagine that it is a problem because it was added without it actually being in the missal. This is much like holding hands during the Pater Noster, which is not an actual rubric in the missal. (Just an observation, I’m not trying to derail the thread.)

Its a Communion line. Its not a Communion and/or Blessing line. It is exclusively a line for receiving Communion.
