Communal Recitation of the pater noster

I went to a TLM today, I noticed that the altar servers and about half of the congregation didn’t recite the pater noster until “sed libera nos a malo”. I know that is how it is supposed to be done. But some sung the entire Paster Noster. Are they allowed to do that? And what is the symbolism behind not reciting together?

The communal recitation of the Pater is part of the dialogue Mass- see for example, the 1958 document De Musica Sacra.

Yes, the congregation did chant the Pater Noster but there was no hand holding

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure. Every time I’ve attended the TLM the Pater Noster is recited by the priest alone, then the congregation says “sed libera nos a malo”. Just wanted to make sure it was approved, because most of the congregation didn’t say it, but enough did to be heard.

Some congregations do, some dont. Personally I prefer the older custom of the Servers responding only with “Sed libera nos a malo”.

Even older than that would be the custom of the people chanting “sed libera…” after the chanted Pater.

The “older custom” is based on the Mediaeval abnormality of a recitied Mass.
