Two of our children attend Catholic gradeschool. They will go to Mass during school and receive ashes and Communion. Later in the evening our entire family will go to Mass for Ash Wednesday. Should those two children receive Communion (and Ashes) again at the later Mass since they did so earlier in the day?

Only today have Eastern Churches begun Advent.

Western Advent hasn’t even started!

Ash Wednesday and Lent are MONTHS away.

Why are you asking this question now?

One may receive Communion a second time in the same day if the second time is at a mass; so the answer is yes. there is no limit on how many times one may receive the ashes; so it is their option.

Yes, you may receive Communion a second time on any day (only a second, never a third unless in danger of death), as long as the second time is at a Mass which you attend (the second time cannot be at a Communion service without Mass, for example).

There are no rules about the ashes. I suppose they could do it a second time, but it is certainly not necessary.

That sounds neat. 🙂 But why not just the entire family go during Communion instead of the later mass?

I’m sure it’ll be simpler… and would definitely save another trip to a mass you attended earler.

My wife and I can’t go to the earlier Mass, its only for the gradeschool students and I’ll be working then anyway. The gradeschool Mass is during school hours and the regular Ash Wednesday Mass will be at 7 PM.

Dizzy,

There’s a simple answer to both questions: Yes.

One may receive Communion twice in the same day, if participating in two Masses. This is clearly stated in canon law.

There is no rule on how many times one may receive ashes. In fact, there’s not even a rule that says one must receive ashes even once. My only thoughts are that you might find some way of removing the ashes from the first time (if they’re even still there), not for any spiritual reason, but because it might cause some confusion for the second priest.
