Hello, all! I tend to be a very anxious individual, especially lately, and currently have alot of trouble discerning between mortal sin, venial sin, temptation, and just plain nothing (I know the criteria for mortal sin on a textbook level, but always seem to think absolutely everything is a “grave matter” or just get confused on if I fully consented to something or not). I feel like I’m in a state of mortal sin 24/7, always seem to find reasons why my previous confessions were sacrilegious and invalid, and overall am very confused and concerned over everything. Very much an overthinker here, but when I start thinking of the “what if’s” and my immortal soul, well…I get scared. Anyway, I go to confession almost weekly, mostly to the same priest who knows my struggles, but I still am having trouble.

My question is this: When one isn’t 100% sure if one is in a state or mortal sin or not, is it worse to receive communion and risk committing sacrilege, or is it worse to give in to the doubt skip communion “just in case”??

See your priest. He would be a better source than individuals on CAF.

I’ll second the previous response; only your priest-confessor should advise you on this matter since he knows your situation.

You need to ask your priest how to address this and then follow his instructions.

Thank you all for the replies. I did ask him this question earlier, and he gave me his advice. I tend to get nervous about taking advice from just one person (even a priest’s, I know they aren’t infallible), but I’ll try to listen better to his council. I will schedule an appointment with him to further discuss things. Thank you again!
