At most church’s I’ve been to, those who have not received their first communion can receive a blessing from the priest by walking through the line with their arms crossed over their chest. In talking with my pastor, he told me that he refuses to do so, because it’s not following procedure.
According to him, the Eucharistic part of the mass has four stages. Taking, blessing, breaking, and giving. He says that they must be done in that order. When giving to the rest of the congregation, he doesn’t feel he can go back to the blessing part.
I understand this, but also feel that in a way, he is denying a simple blessing to those who cannot partake in the Eucharist. Has anyone else heard of this? What are your thoughts on jumping back a couple steps?
