Today, my priest randomly said “the mercy of Christ” to me instead of the body of Christ, when I went for communion. He didn’t say it to anyone else before or after me. Was this a one time thing I shouldn’t worry about, or could it be in response to a recent confession I made.

Haven’t you ever had the wrong word come out of your mouth? Don’t worry about it.

I agree with the above posters. I also want to say that your confessor cannot say anything in regard to a Confession, even if it was yours. You can speak about it all you want, but he is bound by the sacramental seal.

May God bless you all!

I wouldn’t worry about it unless it happens again. Probably just a mess up in his words. He may have been thinking of Christ’s mercy while giving out Communion and his brain said the wrong words.

If it happens again, then ask the priest about it at a good time (usually right after Mass while everyone is chatting with him isn’t good).

Don’t worry about it. He was probably tired out. As another poster said, we have all had the wrong words pop out. It doesn’t mean anything.
Actually, ‘The mercy of Christ’ is a wonderful gift. Wouldn’t mind if it was inadvertently said to me in the same context.

God bless you 🙂

Emphasis mine.
I agree that would be sweet.

God bless.

Actually I’d ask him if the opportunity presented itself.

I once went to a different parish when I was a new Catholic and it was a Charismatic Mass and there were three lines for Communion and one of the features of this bunch of folks was that when you went up for Communion, they’d say different things than just “the Body of Christ.” I later found out it was a serious liturgical abuse and they shouldn’t have done it. When my turn came up to receive, I was told “the body of Peter!” Honest Injun. That’s what she said and I had no time no inclination to say word. This wasn’t the only weird thing going on at that particular Mass, but I didn’t go back there for anymore of their Charismatic antics.

Some times they really mean do deviate. Or it might have been a slip of the tongue. One sure way to find out is to just ask him. He may believe as some do, that the Eucharist is the way to relieve all sins and this was his expression of what he believes. Some do feel that way very strongly these days and live without Confession. If it was more than a slip of the tongue I’m guessing these are his leanings. Just ask him and let us know what he says.

Glenda,

The OP clearly said that the priest didn’t say the same thing to the people ahead of him or behind him in line. Why not give the priest a break and assume the best – that he misspoke – instead of assuming the worst about him?

Hello Suscipe.

Why assume anything? Just ask him what he meant. Ya know the old saw that says to assume anything makes an *** out of u and me.
