I hate to sound like a broken record but the Eastern Orthodox Catholics are some who you may consider ‘listen to those who tickle their ears’ as they do not believe the Pope to be the infallible ‘Vicar of Christ’ yet they are still allowed to recieve communion.
Bill Clinton, who was neither a Roman nor an Eastern Orthodox Catholic recieved communion, the only quibble was whether or not he was actually in a state of serious sin due to the whole Monica Lewinski deal.
No no no. Bill Clinton certainly should not have been allowed to receive communion, and NOT just on account of Monica Lewinsky. He isn’t Catholic or Orthodox to my knowledge, and that fact has always been a problem. Just like John Kerry (who openly supports abortion legislation but is Catholic) also causes problems for those Catholics who are serious about their beliefs when he receives.
And as for the Orthodox - they have Apostolic Succession for starters. Their priesthood is in a valid and unbroken line from the Apostles according to Catholic understanding. This is important. They have preserved much more of
the integrity of the Apostolic faith from the time of the Apostles than any other non-Catholic denomination.
When one takes Communion in the Catholic Church one isn’t
just assenting to a certain view of the Eucharist (the Real Presence). One is assenting (at least in the negative sense of not seriously disagreeing) with a whole bunch of other beliefs that we consider essential about the Sacraments and the faith in general. One important one is sacramental confesion. This is, we consider, a vital part of the worthy preparation of the soul of every Catholic when they receive the Eucharist. The Orthodox also believe in Sacramental confession. Other denominations don’t.
And being that we’re discussing communion in the Catholic church, it’s up to us at any rate to decide which beliefs are necessary to permit reception of the Eucharist and which aren’t.
If I start a sports club, a school or a restaurant, I’m allowed, to a greater or lesser extent, to set conditions on who can enter. I may set high membership fees for the club, or make it female-only. I may make the school female only and require the passing of an entrance exam. I may require jackets and ties for men entering the restaurant and serve only pricey food.
And why not? If we take seriously our faith and our belief in what the Eucharist means then we
should be selective in who we permit to receive it. Paul says to receive the Eucharist worthily and the Church has done its best to determine and interpret precisely what that means.
And that’s why even Catholics who are in a state of serious unconfessed sin or haven’t fasted for an hour beforehand also aren’t permitted to receive. Not all Orthodox would be permitted to receive - they may possibly not meet these conditions either.
The American bishops have very recently been seriously discussing the scandal of allowing Catholic politicians to receive Communion who openly support legislation permitting abortion, for example. Such as John Kerry or Nancy Pelosi. If we’re that serious and restrictive about CATHOLICS receiving communion why on earth should we permit any Joe or Jane Christian off the street to damn their souls by receiving it unworthily?
