I’m brand new to this forum, so please forgive me if this topic has already been brought up. I was wanting to get everyone’s take on communion in the hand. Personally, when I receive communion I come up and genuflect to the alter and receive the host on my tongue. I’m obviously in the minority at my church. I just wanted to see where and when communion in the hand began. Is it a heresy? I was always taught that the only person who is allowed to handle the Eucharist is the priest, bishop, etc. Makes me wonder if the whole ebay fiasco would’ve been prevented if communion in the hand wasn’t allowed. God Bless!!

I’ve been a convert for 7 years. I used to recieve in the hand ( in RCIA I was taught either way was O.K.) but now I recieve on the tongue.

…i for one who came from the communion rail where you kneeled and recieved on the tongue, do miss it from time to time… and if i were in a church of 50 people or less, i could understand the return to the practice… but… having nearly broken my neck over someone who genuflected without warning, I am happy we don’t do it that way anymore…

…I have no problem with those that want to receive in that manner, but i wish there was a seperate line or at least some warning to the person behind you…

…this is not a regular member… if it were, then I could have prepared myself…👍

Perhaps we could market a brown scapular that was reversible. The part down the back could be flipped around at communion to reveal a sign,“keep two steps distance - genuflection in progress”

Reception of Holy Communion in the hand almost certainly began at the Last Supper and was common in the early Church. In the United States, Reception of Holy Communion in the hand has been permitted since July 25, 1977 with the approval of the local bishop.

No:

…*Heresy *is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same…

This is certainly possible, however similar abuses have occured at times when reception on the tongue was the only option. Short of an open-mouth post-Communion inspection to assure that a communicant has actually swallowed the Host, these is nothing to prevent a person who has decided to steal a Host from discretely removing the Host from his or her tongue.

Peace!
