My mother, sister and a friend went to mass with me this morning and I am the only catholic (sad, I know). My sister and her friend were wondering if they could receive communion, I told them I didn’t know but I would ask here. Is it ok for a non-catholic to receive communion?

In general, no. In exceptional circumstances, I believe it can be allowed by the Bishop.

Chuck is correct. Catholics believe that the Eucharist truly is the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore for protection of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as for the good of the people, those who are not properly disposed should not present themselves for communion. That includes both non-catholics and catholics who find themselves outside of a state of grace.

Here’s a link to the Church’s current guidelines to Catholics, non-Catholic Christians, and non-Christians regarding the reception of Holy Communion from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, link.

These guidelines are printed in the missalettes used at Mass. They appear on the inside front cover of the missalettes used at my parish.

Thanks. 👍
