Hello,

I am currently going through RCIA (I am baptised, Church of England) and a month ago I received my “Rite of Welcome” In the past weeks I have been attending daily Mass. My question is, during Communion can I go up and receive a blessing from the priest?

Thank you

Hi Webbern,

I have heard this is done very often. You cross your hands on your chest and bow your head. I also have heard of cases where the priest did not know what it was all about. Find out from the priest himself or from the RCIA people.

Don’t however feel you have to do it. Saints have recommended “Spiritual Communion”, which also brings down blessings on you.

Here is a recommended way to do it :

My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,

*come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.*Amen.

The Deacon and Priest at my Church told those of us preparing for RCIA that we can go up and ask for a blessing. We cross our arms across our chest. Some churches tell you to put your finger across your lips as a sign you are aksing for a blessing. I have had a blessing several times.
