Communion restrictions - Traditional Latin Mass?

We were traveling recently and found a (Traditional Latin) Mass that occurred at a good time for our sail-through of the small town. We knew to dress more formally and with chapel veils, et al, but we were greeted at the door by an usher who informed us of the criteria for receiving Communion. Our exclusion from the Eucharis included: being baptized in an English rite, not assisting solely at the TLM, and one of my sons was not wearing a tie.

Can this be right?? We didn’t know enough to respond, so we ended up leaving. As a lifelong Catholic, I didn’t realize there were (and could be!) exclusions of this nature, not to mention dress code restrictions, from the Eucharist…? Hopefully misinterpreting or not understanding…please give me more information!
 
It sounds like you stumbled upon an “independent” chapel. From what you have said, these people do not seem to be in communion with the Church based simply on “not assisting solely at the TLM,” which is code for we don’t like or think that the “New” Mass is valid. No parish has a right to place such restrictions on Catholics (especially the tie) and Catholics also have the right to assist at any approved form of the Mass with no obligation to assist “solely at the TLM.” In short, these people are, at least, not in communion with the Church or, at worst, sedevacantists. In other words, it wasn’t a “Catholic” Church.

This was certainly a Mass offered by a schismatic group, or else the usher was taking liberties.
 
No, this is not licit at all and is obviously being done by either an outside, schismatic group or a very schismatic usher. 😦

Did you find this Mass on Masstimes.org?

We always use this website to find Masses when we travel. I didn’t think they published Mass times for schismatic or sedevacantist organizations. Am I wrong about that?

If they do publish the Mass times for the outliers, I need to be more careful! :eek:
 
Not wearing a tie as reason for not being allowed to receive communion is new to me.

Thank you all for the responses, glad to know I was not crazy in thinking that was crazy. 😉 Someone asked where we found the mass - my hubby just googled “Catholic Mass Saturday night XYZ town” randomly and it popped up. It was at the right time, we knew attending Mass the next day would be ridiculously hairy, etc. etc. We thought it’d be a good cultural opportunity for our kids to experience the Tridentine Mass…joke was on us, ha! Thankfully we found an alternative easily. Thanks again!

I wouldn’t rely on random Google searches like that. I would check first with the local Diocese - go to their website and make sure the parish is listed.
