We chose a Communion Sponsor for our son, but the sponsor passed away last month. Can we still have him as the Sponsor and let someone stand in for him at the service? His wife was our daughter’s sponsor and I’m hoping she or anyone else can stand in for him.

Thanks!

I believe you can.

When I was confirmed we (the whole class) had a stand in just in case our sponsor couldn’t make it or died.

God bless you and good luck to your son on his spiritual journey 😃

Communion Sponsor?? There’s no such thing. Do you mean ‘Confirmation Sponsor’?

I’m sorry if this is insensitive but the role of sponsor involves being alive. If the wife was sponsor for your daughter, why can’t she also be sponsor for your son rather than just be a stand-in for her dead husband?

I am sorry about the loss of your son’s sponsor, that must be so sad for him as there would have been a very special reason he was chosen.

Why not have the wife stand-in for her husband and perhaps carry a photo of him, or a lit candle so he’s somehow still represented and remembered?

Good luck with it all… 🙂

I assume you mean a Confirmation Sponsor. I’ve never heard of a communion sponsor before.

It’s important to remember that the purpose of a sponsor (normally their Godparent) is not a symbolic or honorary position, but rather an active part of a person’s life. This is from the Rite of Confirmation.
The sponsor brings the candidate to receive the sacrament, presents the candidate to the minister for anointing, and will later help the candidate fulfill his/her baptismal promises faithfully under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
