The norms for fast and abstinence are one hour now in the Byzantine Catholic Church. From the particular law:

Canon 707 §l
§1. Bread for the Eucharist is to be made of wheaten flour, water and yeast only. According to liturgical prescription the prosphora bears the seal (IC XC NI KA).
§2. The Eucharistic fast shall be from solids one hour before the reception of the Divine Eucharist. Medications and water may be taken anytime.
§3. The vestments for the Eucharist are according to the Ruthenian recension and are to be put on in the order of the vesting prayers. The sticharion can be of any liturgical color.
§4. The Divine Liturgy may be celebrated at any suitable time, although the morning hours are preferred. Rather than the Divine Liturgy, the Office of the Presanctified Gifts, preferably celebrated in the evening, is prescribed for the ordinary weekdays of the Great Fast.
§5. The Divine Liturgy should normally be celebrated in a properly constructed church. The altar where the Liturgy is to be celebrated should have its own iconostas. In a case of true necessity, the Divine Liturgy can be celebrated outside a church building.
§6. The metropolitan Liturgical Commission is to prepare a standard text of usage for the Divine Liturgy. This is to be adapted to modern times, legitimate organic development of the Liturgy.
§7. Only a bishop, presbyter or deacon may preach the homily.
§8. Women are prohibited from serving at the altar.
I looked up that canon in the CCEO and it just says to follow the sui iuris church? It is a different text… Are you quoting from a law of a particular Eastern church?

What I mean to say, is that in the Eastern Rites communion is not a one hour absistence like it is in Catholicism. One must say two canons and an akathist the night before, the prayers before communion (which are by no means short) and total absistence starting the night before. This simply makes it impractical for Byzantine Catholics to receive daily communion.
Do they HAVE to, or is only the fast necessary? I should add I live outside the territory of my church and practice in a Latin parish.

Yes, Byzantine Catholic particular law. The Ukrainian Catholic particular law has:

Can. 93. (CCEO, c. 713 §2)
§ 1. Participation of the faithful in the Most Holy Eucharist involves appropriate personal prayerful preparation and a Eucharistic fast which consists of abstinence from the consummation of food for one hour before the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. The use of natural water and medications does not break the Eucharistic fast.
§ 2. The faithful are encouraged to a more intense prayerful preparation and a more strict Eucharistic fast, particularly the reception of the Most Holy Eucharist on an empty stomach.

I see! I don’t know if Russian Catholics have any law like this written down considering we have no hierarchy. What could the case be for us? For the fast and also if the prayers are obligatory. I thought I knew but now I’m not so sure.

I just read an article about the Orthodox practice. It seems that its encouraged to go to Confession, fast, and also fast from 1 to 3 days from animal products, and say the preparatory prayers. It talked about someone who receives Communion rarely, this could be a great help to them. But what I’m confused about, is in Eastern Catholicism, in the Russian rite, are all these things obligatory? Or is it just the being in a state of grace and Conmunion fast, as for the Latin rite? I have been just doing that but fasting from midnight. But I didn’t say special prayers (besides my daily prayers) and I didn’t fast from animal products. Is that a rule or a devotion? Can I not receive then as an Eastern Catholic? And what makes it more complicated, I go to daily Mass. Its not like I receive once a month and do all this exact preparation. The previous days Communion even helps to be more recollected. I am not against preparing but if I were to follow this rule, I would have to become vegan permanently to have daily Communion 😉 could someone please clarify for me about the Eastern rule about who can receive Communion and what preparation is necessary? Please I’m just looking for an answer to my question, not discussion on my situation because I already have someone helping me with that. I just want to know what the Eastern practice IS - whatever the case is with me. Thanks 🙂

You should receive as often as dictated by your spiritual father.
