Some friends of mine are saying those that receive communion both with the Host and The Cup are receiving twice and two separate communions. I know this is wrong but how do I respond? I know the early Church received under both species and it was in the middle centuries that only the Host was Offered. What is the history behind this and where can I go to get more info on this? Thanks in advance

Well, the Second Vatican Council decided that perhaps on important occaisions (eg. Baptism, Confirmation, ect.) the laity could be allowed to recieve from the Chalice. This was translated as “give everyone at anytime the chalice and furthermore lets have lay minister’s hold the chalice”.

But recieving from both is not two separate communions- there is One Communion.

Tell them to go back to Sunday school and ask that question to the nuns. They will learn fast to go and read the CCC before making that kind of statements.😃

Please understand that I am not trying to make fun of you. You know better even if you are not sure of the sources.:o

Ask your friends if the priest is receiving Holy Communion twice when he consumes the host and the precious blood. I’m sure that will make them think.

Receiving Holy Communion under both species is a fuller expression of the sacrament. It is not receiving Holy Communion twice.

It seems to me to be an irrelevant point. The only time it would ever matter whether we’re receiving Communion twice, is if we’re receiving twice on the same day, which is the max allowed. So, if your friends choose to believe that they’re receiving twice, tell them not to receive again at the second Mass they attend that day.

So, to delve into a more technical parsing of the question, when you receive either Species, you are receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus. Since He is infinite, while He resides in you physically, it is impossible to receive “more”, and thus, if you receive each Species within 15 min of each other, you are only receiving once.

Can anyone tell me why or direct me to a source that explains why the Latin Church stopped the receiption of Communion under both species? I know the Eastern Rites have always had both but why did the West Stop? Thanks

Once again, bias and agenda obscure the truth. The Holy See, in the legitimate exercise of its Christ-given authority, allowed bishops to make the decision as to the frequency with which the laity were allowed to receive under both forms. The Church states that reception of both Sacred Species is a “fuller sign,” but one may recieve the Fullness of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ by receiving only one of Them.

It strikes me that receiving both Host and Chalice is a little like choosing to have dessert at the end of a meal - it doesn’t constitute a second separate meal, nor is it necessary, simply makes a fuller meal :yup:

Ah, Lily, you never should have said “meal!”
