IFIRC, you can receive twice, provided that it is during Mass and for two separate occasions. For example, one could have received Eucharist for a wedding on a Saturday, and again to fulfill the Sunday obligation Saturday night. There might be a distinction there between when the Liturgical day starts and ends, but I will defer on that.

Also, a Catholic in danger of death is permitted (and encouraged) to receive, regardless of whether or not they have already received that day.

When a man has committed Adultery and is separated from his wife and with another women. He receives communion. Is he not to refrain from receiving communion?

Not sure what that has to do with the OP, but if he has a formed conscience he will know that he’s committing a mortal sin and will refrain from receiving Communion.

It doesn’t have to be two separate occasions. You can go to the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass and again to the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass and receive both times.

You can visit your dad in the hospital and receive at his bedside when the chaplain gives out Communion and then leave and go to Mass and receive again.

You CANNOT go to Mass and receive then visit your dad in the hospital and receive at his bedside when the chaplain gives out Communion.

That second time in the same day must be at a Mass at which you have participated – you can’t just walk in at the end of the Mass and receive for a second time that day.

From the Code of Canon Law:
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.

Just to clarify, the second time is permitted if the person is participating in the Mass. This is meant to prevent the abuse of someone simply coming in for the Eucharist. This was an issue in the past as people thought the Eucharist was just “communion” and not the full liturgy. They would go from church to church just to receive the Body of Christ multiple times in a day.

When did people commit such abuse? It is not the first time I have heard the claim, but the first I have thought to question it.

Under the 1917 Code of Canon Law, reception was limited to once per day except in danger of death (as [user]603304529[/user] alludes above). When did people go from church to church, receiving multiple times?

The question of the frequency of communion has been with the Church for centuries and there have been many writings on the subject both concerning abuses and spiritual necessities of having frequent communion. There is an excellent book on this subject that covers a full history of the subject from what I mentioned of people going from Mass to Mass just to receive communion to times that people would take home loaves of consecrated Eucharist to use for the week. The book that contains this history is “The Frequency of the Eucharist Throughout History” by Jesuit Fr. Robert Taft of the Pontifical Oriental Institute.
