My friend is a seventh day adventist and he told me that they only celebrate the eucharist once a year as apposed to Catholics who receive communion every Sunday. Is there anywhere in the Holy Scripture as to how often or when should we receive the body and blood of Christ?

Acts 20:7
On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together tobreak bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and he prolonged his speech until midnight.
suggests to me that communion should be recieved weekly.

thank you for your quick respond. But can you clarify why Paul prolonged it and why does that suggest that we should partake in communion weekely?

Thanks again.

Paul was an itinerant speaker in the communities he taught. It might be months or years before he returned, if at all. In that case he apparently had much to say before he left.

The “first day of the week” gathering was a regular occurrence as can be seen in Acts as well as other epistles. This to me suggests weekly “communion”.

It’s funny that some churches see the value in weekly contributions, but see no need for weekly communion.

Good answers above though . It’s bascially just been tradition.

I would say that since we are witnessing the covenant at the last supper and sacrifice of Jesus live and in person during mass it would only make sense to recieve Christ at each mass.

Of course, providing that you are Catholic and not in a state of moral sin. 👍

I believe (although I am no expert in the SDA) that the reason they celebrate the Lord’s Supper annually is because Passover is an annual celebration.

Well as Catholics we are not “bible-only” Christians, but I would offer Mal.1:11

For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.

The pure offering is, of course, the Eucharist. And according to this text it should be offered every day. Since the sun is always shining somewhere, the pure offering is always to be offered somewhere. It is to be a ceaseless offering.

Catholics can receive Communion EVERY DAY (not just every Sunday), as Priests celebrate Mass every day.
