So I understand that receiving communion in a state of mortal sin is in itself a mortal sin. But I heard a gospel reading that said that the act was looked down upon. So does that still mean it is a mortal sin?

Yes it would be a mortal sin for you to do it.

"Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you, and many sleep. " 1 Cor. 11:27-30

It most definitely is a mortal sin. In fact its sacrilege.

CCC 2120 Sacrilege consists in profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments and other liturgical actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God. Sacrilege is a grave sin especially when committed against the Eucharist, for in this sacrament the true Body of Christ is made substantially present for us
