I received my first communion last Sunday. How often am I obliged to receive communion, and must I confess before each communion? Do I have to confess this Saturday before receiving communion on Sunday, or can I just receive communion this Sunday without confession?

Once a day, though you can do it daily.
and must I confess before each communion?
Not necessary unless you have mortal sin.

Same reply as above: if you have mortal sin, then confession is a must; if you have only venial sins, then the urgency isn’t there. It would still help to have confession once a month though.

You only have to go to Confession prior to Communion if you are in a state of mortal sin. If you are confused about what is mortal sin, check out your Catechism of the Catholic Church and also try to find a good examination of conscience booklet to follow. There are many kinds of those, available in Catholic bookstores, and there may even be some brochures in your parish, like there is in mine. A thorough examination of conscience every week will keep you on the up-and-up about the state of your soul!

Congratulations on your first Communion, friend, that’s awesome! With many blessings,

Geraldine

Your only obligation to receive Communion is to receive at least once a year during the Easter season.

Once a year during the Easter season. However you are obligated to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day if you receive Holy Communion or not.

Must I confess before each communion?

Only if you are aware of committing Mortal sin.

Do I have to confess this Saturday before receiving communion on Sunday, or can I just receive communion this Sunday without confession?

If you are aware of Mortal sin, and will not have the opportunity to receive Holy Communion again for several months and did not have the opportunity to Confess your sins before Mass. You can receive after reflecting on your sins, saying an Act of Contrition and firmly intending to Confess at the earliest possible moment.

question brings up a point that preparation for first communion, or other sacraments does not end when you celebrate the sacrament. There is a period of Mystagogy following RCIA which is extremely critical, as it is intended to answer questions such as these, and to explore more fully the mystery to which you have been initiated. Those who have been confirmed or received first communion are strongly urged to continue their Christian education, and not to regard this as some kind of “graduation”.
