Does anyone know of a website or service that can indicate if a company is conducting business that is consistent with Catholic Teaching? For example, if I was taking a cruise, I would be willing to pay more for the cruise line that did not contribute to planned parenthood, etc, etc. Does such a site or service exist? Would CA be willing to start yet another department/service to the Catholic faithful?

I know the Ave Maria mutual funds only invest in companies consistent with Catholic teaching. So one source would be the companies that are included in the funds.

I agree and think this is a great idea Qui Chang.

Evan made a good suggestion about the companies in Ave Maria Mutual Funds. Probably at the website for the few Catholic companies you know about you can follow links to get more similar leads, i would think.

What a good idea! We can identify some of those companies by looking at Ave Maria’s annual report. Here is the one from 2006:

Actually this fund uses an narrow subset of the broad list of Catholic Teachings. I find them highly selective and even a bit vindictive in their selections in the ones they choose and do not think they represent Catholic Teachings with their subset of selection criteria.

Hi NewUlm, yes, its entirely possible that Ave Maria’s selections do not fully encompass the Church’s teachings. But I wonder…do they err in their selections? Do they pick companies which go against Catholic teachings?

Well, they err in a way by an error of omission of Catholic Social Teachings. One part that stands out in poor spirit is boycott companies who give benefits to same-gender partners. That in my view is encouraging a form of workplace discrimination and is in very poor taste.

Also, their stance on companies who “support abortion”. That is pretty vague and most companies do not have or could not do anything anyways with this stance so it seems meaningless.

What is left out is the long Catholic Social Teaching history of supporting workers rights, unions, fair wage practices, third world outsourcing, etc…

Remember this fund is run by Tom Monaghan, and his internal employee policies (through Ave Maria ventures) also historically have not reflected these Catholic Values.

Sorry, but, the teaching of the Church is that same sex partners should not be granted benefits that “mimic” the benefits of marriage.

Benedictus, I hope you don’t mind me butting in, but I think I know which document KathleenElsie has in mind.

Here is the conclusion of it:
  1. The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behaviour or to legal recognition of homosexual unions. The common good requires that laws recognize, promote and protect marriage as the basis of the family, the primary unit of society. Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behaviour, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society, but would also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity. The Church cannot fail to defend these values, for the good of men and women and for the good of society itself.

Pope John Paul II gave his approval of the document in March of 2003.
