This seems like a really interesting order of the Catholic Church.
Does anyone have any first-hand insight to this group? Apparently this is one of the fastest growing in this part of the world.

I’ve met several of the Companions of the Cross and I have a friend (or rather, the brother of a close friend, so I guess that makes him my friend) who is currently a seminarian with them. I’ve spoken with a few of their priests at length and have been quite impressed with them and they’re quite obviously instruments of God’s grace.

Thanks for the reply. That’s encouraging to hear.

Many years ago, I heard a talk by Father Bedad (?) just after their founding. They seemed a really bright hope in a besieged Church.

The companions of the Cross are totally obedient to the Magisterium and to the Faith. I have met quite a few of them but I find the founder the hilarious. As much as he will talk about profound things, his sense of humour sends me flying! We have a Companion just in a city not far from here. I should say he was born in a city not far from here. I get their journal on a regular basis. The Spirit is truly moving!. Here is their website:

I read about them in a book at school, do they have any apostolates in America?

They also staff two parishes in the Archdiocese of Galvestion-Houston.

I believe one of them is Queen of Peace and the other is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the parish we Carmelites just pulled out of. They also have taken over our pre-novitiate house and I believe that they are considering using it in their formation process.

Does anyone have any opinion(s) of the Companions of the Cross (C.C.), or have/had first-hand experience with the priests/brothers of the C.C.?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. God bless.

I don’t have any personal experience with them. I did a quick search online and didn’t find anything negative about them though.

I’m sure other posters will have more info for you.

Good luck

I heard a talk by Father Bedad [sp?] when they first started and was very impressed. Everything I have heard since has been good.

I did a similar search too and wasn’t able to find anything negative as well. Thank you!

Thank you for your reply.

Fr. Bedad is indeed a eloquent speaker, his homilies and reflections/writings are very enlightening and inspirational. It is probably because of his deep deveotion to the Holy Spirit. * Being Charismatic is one of the foundung pillars of the Companions.

God bless.

From their website:
We are committed to supporting and taking part in, even giving leadership to, the New Evangelization, being promoted by the Holy Father and the bishops of the Church. We believe evangelizing means bringing people into a personal experience of and on going relationship with the risen and living Saviour, Jesus Christ. We see evangelization mainly as a three-step process: the proclamation of the gospel of Christ and an invitation to surrender all to him; the positive response of the hearer to the invitation; the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. It is thus something that, with God’s grace, we begin and that God himself finishes. Evangelization, we believe, demands that we make it our highest priority after our ministry to God himself (praise and worship). With all the above having been said, however, we wish to make the point that evangelization is not enough. It is only the beginning. It must be followed by teaching, discipline and much pastoring
This is very encouraging!

I have met Fr Bob Bedard personnally many times. It is overwhelming what the Lord is doing through him. He is totally right on. His community of priests is growing in leaps and bounds. Many priests, a female counterpart is being founded, and a lay associate as well. He is also connected to Madonna House in some respect and one of his houses is quite close to the foundation of Venerable Catherine doherty.

Nothing but good fruit is coming out of there. Many seminarians from all over the world come to Ottawa to join. We had him speak at a Charismatic Cionference a few years back.

I have been to two of their mass services. One a healing mass, and one on a regular sunday (in Ottawa).

If you are charismatic, then you will definitely find it home. I love both mass and charismatic worship, and when both are combined, it makes me feel at home.

🙂

very good order, or at least it will be once it IS an Order. I haven’t met Fr. edard, or at least I don’t think so. I have had a few contacts with another priest there in Ottawa, Fr. Charles. I have very high respect for him.

Three years has passed since the last post in this thread, but I wanted to shed some light on this.

I’ve known several Companion’s throughout my time in Ottawa, and although I’m not a member of St. mary’s (and live very close by) I have several associations with them. It’s hard not to when you’re involved in the Catholic community here. Their home base is in Ottawa after all, so they huge presence here. I can assure all of you that this is a very good thing.

I’ve met several priests, several seminarians. It’s now reached the point where I now know almost know some people who’ve gone coast to coast (knowing them pre-sem and them being ordained). I’ve chatted with Father Bob (who gave me some sound advice during a difficult time in my life). Their formation is solid, their theology is solid. Even people who join their seminary and then leave find themselves with excellent formation. I cannot stress the impact they have had on the Catholic community here in a positive way, and I cannot stress enough their orthodoxy. Some may be “put off” by their embracing of the charismatic renewal…but don’t be. They are a lovely order, excellent people, and very loyal to Rome.

i cannot say enough good things about this order. They’ve impacted my life and the lives of so many others, and are a pillar of light within Ottawa. That and they have perpetual Adoration at St. Mary’s (their home Church).

There’s another reason why I’m posting this (other than to confirm that they are awesome); Father Bob isn’t doing too well health wise these days. If you visit their web site you can find out more, but frankly things aren’t looking so good. All prayers would be welcome.
