Comparing 2018 and 1918...Are we happier?

Be prepared to cry a lot. Some of the stories are beautiful, but some are also horrific. Like, say, a forced abortion on an underaged girl…

I would love to have lived back in 1918 IF I WAS SUPER RICH.

If I was a Duke or rich Count / Lord, it would have been awesome. Or if I was a good priest in a nice parish.

But if I was poor or middle class… no way – after World War II would have been far better than being an adult in 1918.

I think Drexel University was founded with money from Katherine’s father, Anthony. It’s a pretty awesome story. Katherine was one of the wealthiest heiresses in the United States. Xavier University was one of her projects that she herself funded.

I like St Katharine Drexel. But I’m half Philadelphian so that might be by default. 💓

Aren’t they the same Drexels who were Drexel University?
Extended family. Wasn’t St. Katharine’s dad, but it was the extended family.

Hey the super rich American women were being married off to the British aristocracy to secure their fortunes and estates.

Maybe I’d have still met my husband…as an Earl. 🤣🤣

(My husband is as “working class” as I am, which is what makes this hilarious.)

Honestly, even as far as the internet - like many converts, I learned my faith off the internet. I remember sneaking around pretending to play video games when I was actually researching Catholicism. (I realize that’s kind of backwards from most kids).

Oh wow. What a story.

I did that too - well, not sneaking video games, but I was watching YouTube videos on Catholicism when I would’ve normally been cruising Netflix.

Anthony Joseph Drexel, Sr (the founder of Drexel University) was St. Katherine’s uncle (her father’s brother). Her father’s name was Frances Anthony Drexel.

The only reason I’d travel back any era for fashion and culture like what people did for fun, the dances, hairstyles, nightclubs.

As my dad always said, back when a buck was a buck.

I figured the Drexels were like the Vanderbilts, the Dukes, and the Wideners. All related at some point if not the same branch.

Yeah, I grew up in the Catholicism is totally of the devil meant to corrupt good Christians by teaching heresy. It was a common belief that the antichrist would be pope.

I did have a civil war era ball gown though. It was a lot of fun. I can’t see myself pulling off 1918 fashion as well. I’m short and curvy. There’s no way I could pull off those dresses without looking like I was drowning in them.

Well Anthony Drexel, Sr. founded the company “Drexel Morgan & Co” which eventually became a company called “JP Morgan”

I don’t qualify as curvy but I’m definitely not the straight frame of the era.

I’d need a great corsetiere to get that perfect forward S curve myself.

Yeah I got the S curve all on my own.

1930’s starts looking more like what I could do. I need the attention to my waist to start looking ok.

I remember we did have to modify the mid-1800’s gown pattern. Our ancestors may have covered their ankles, but that didn’t mean they covered their bosoms. I seem to remember Little Women discussing the addition of rags to the corset as well. Kind of like what high school girls use toilet paper for now…
