Hi, I am looking for some kind of chart that gives a general overview of the main differences between the Catholic faith & Protestant faiths. Also, I want to include specifics on Jehovah’s Witness, Mormons & Seventh Day Adventists. The goal is to prepare these 6th graders for the confrontation that will occur as they grow older. To help them understand how to use Scripture and the Catechism to defend our faith. Does anyone have an ideas? Thanks!! 🙂

This is an energetic project. God Bless you for taking this approach.

This said, I think that because Protestantism is so nebulous (they can believe pretty much whatever they want) it is very hard to draw comparisons. There are too many Protestant churches.

You might be better served to make the kids very solid (also a huge project!) in what they know about the Blessed Sacrament, sacraments in general, the Blessed Mother, the difference between clerical priesthood and the priesthood of all believers, and liturgy.

I would say those are some of the most contested beliefs between Catholics and Protestants.

***No chart; but here are some of the MAJOR differences

Religion actually founded by God CC:[Jesus; Mt. 16:15-19] yes; Protrestants No*

Oldest Christian Faith in the world [2,000 years old] CC: yes; Protestants No

Gave the World the Bible: Catholic Church yes, Protestants, No

Use all 73 Books of the orginal Christian Bible; CC, yes; Protestants No

Accept ALL SEVEN Sacraments as Instituted by Christ; CC, yes; Protestants, No

Can prove there faith by the Bible;[without conflicting with other Bible verses] CC, yes; Protestants No

Have both the Holy Spirit [John 14; 16-17] and Jesus Himself [John 17:15-19] present every moment of every day to assure teachings on all matters of Faith and Morals; CC, yes; Protestants No

The Only place on Earth to meet Jesus Really, Truly Present in Person: CC, yes, Protestants No

Have the wonderous gift of KNOWN FOGIVENESS OFSINS; CC, yes; Protestants, No
If your class is able to commit this to memory; they will do extremely well in explaining the differences between the CC and all Protestant churchs and faiths.**

God Bless, Pat

Here is a good resource to show how the apostles teaching compairs to Catholicism vs Protestantism.

I have an idea, but it would help if I knew what kind of group this is. Are we talking about 6th graders in a class at a private school, or are we talking about 6th graders at a parish in a group that meets for something like CCD?

My idea involves using internet forums, just like what you’re doing. But more than just CAF, of course. A lot depends on what kind of group we’re talking about, though. It could be a really fun ongoing group-discussion kind of thing, but it depends on how big a group it is and the kind of setting you meet in.

Hi Pat, Yes this are some major differences. But perhaps a more balanced view would be to also specify WHY protestants went wrong i.e. personal interpretation and Luther’s personal beliefs in faith alone and not good works.

That’s going to be tough to find. There are thousands upon thousands of Protestant communions. Today’s craze of starting churches founded by a charismatic talker results in a slightly different theology entering the world daily. I suggest a book, from which you can make a chart, “Separated Brethren” by William Whalen. Some of the data is dated but he breaks out the main Protestant branches for review. It is very uncritical and simply an analysis.

Thanks for all your responses. I know there are too many Protestant denominations to get all of the differences. In fact, I am a convert and know how different they are. I am teaching CCD to 6th grade girls. Some are homeschooled, some are in parochial school, some are in public school.

The goal is to teach them that we have our foundation in Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition & the Magesterium, while, in general, most Protestant churches are Sola Scriptura and because of that there are different interpretations. We want them to understand that the answer to ALL the arguments against the Church are found in the Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition & the Magesterium. We want them to begin to learn how to defend our faith. I don’t want to overwhelm them, but get them started on this part of their faith journey.

So anymore advice? Thanks!!

I think that this is too hard for them to truly understand and could really confuse them.

The easiest way that I would do it is to concentrate on the Sacraments. Because the Sacraments are what the Catholic faith is made of.

I think that if you could stress that the Eucharist is what makes our faith so important and what it truly is, why it is what it is, etc that would be you best way to approach it.

Then always remind them in order to have the True Church it must consist of all of the Sacraments. Then it could be simple for them to see. And something that they could remember the rest of their life. Hope this helps.

protestant, evangelical, and fundamentalists lack the seven sacraments, especially the real presence, and/or they lack apostolic succession, specifically petrine succession.
