Vatican, Jun. 27 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) will unveil a compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on June 28, at a solemn liturgical celebration in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Compendium was prepared by a special Vatican commission, chaired by Pope Benedict himself in his previous capacity as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The book, offering an abridged presentation of the teachings found in the full Catechism, will be made available only in an Italian-language edition. The world’s episcopal conferences have been charged with the responsibility of preparing translations.
Pope John Paul II (bio - news) had called in 2002 for the preparation of a shorter version of the Catechism. In 2003, he appointed a commission to prepare the new text, with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as chairman.
In his letter of appointment, Pope John Paul II wrote that the new volume should provide, “in a concise fashion, the essential contents and fundamentals of the faith of the Church.” The new work, he said, should provide a reliable introduction to Church teachings while respecting the place of the full Catechism as a comprehensive presentation. At about 200 pages, the Compendium is a much briefer . . . .
