Complete confessions?

So apparently I haven’t been making complete confessions. I am never one to go into to much detail (I still communicate the nature of my sin) and my priest has never gotten onto me for it… I haven’t been saying the number of times I committed my sins. I have been saying my sins in plural form though

You must confess your mortal sins in number and kind. That being said, you didn’t know this and your priest never asked you for a number. In my personal opinion, I believe that your confessions, as you have described them, were valid. Now that you know this, start confessing the number of times that you commit a mortal sin.

You must confess your mortal sins in number and kind. That being said, you didn’t know this and your priest never asked you for a number. In my personal opinion, your confessions were valid. Now that you know this, start confessing the number of times that you commit a mortal sin.

Thanks you. I kind of freak out about stuff like this. Whenever I sin I always feel awful. So I constantly worry about making good confessions.

I usually make a list of my sins for confession. Although up until now I have not included the number cause I didn’t know to.

Notice the important point, though, mosinowner: it’s your mortal sins that you must confess “in number and kind.” Venial sins do not have this explicit requirement. If you’re confessing sins that are venial, then that is a good thing: but it is not a necessary thing in the context of the sacrament, nor does it require “number and kind.”

In short: like Zekariya says, don’t sweat it!

While confessing mortal sins in number and kind is required by Canon Law, I do not believe it is actually required for the validity of the sacrament. In fact, the sacrament is valid even if you and the priest cannot understand each other’s language!

You appear to struggle with scrupulosity. In cases like this, it is always best to seek out a regular confessor whom you trust, and obey him in all matters of conscience. It is too easy to become nervous about a sin or a confession and come here asking for anonymous help. We cannot help you in matters of conscience, try as we might. We just can’t read what is on your heart and soul as well as a priest in the confessional. So find a confessor, trust him, and be at peace.

Then please listen to your priest . He is the one who knows you and is able to guide you if he thinks you really should be adding number of times etc. What he needs to hear is that you are sorry as that is what Jesus wants to hear. What makes you think that they be void if the priest has forgiven you each time? Carry on as you do and allow to be guided by the priest rather than what you may pick up elsewhere. *

Venial sins do NOT need to be confessed in number and kind. So please do not spend much time at trying to figure out how many times one did some venial sins.
