Completing penance before communion

Hi there

Today I went to confession and I was instructed to read Part 4 of the CCC as my penance. I plan to go to a vigil mass tomorrow night (Saturday), is it OK to receive communion and do my penance over the course of the next few days? I don’t think I will have finished it by tomorrow night.

You will be fine to receive. Yours sins are forgiven when you are given absolution, not when you penance is completed.

Technically I think one is obliged to complete the penance before ones next confession or confess the failure to do so.

Generally, it is best to do it as soon as reasonably convenient lest one forget to do it.
