Completion of the marital act

Would it be a mortal sin if one participated in the marital act but was not able to complete it due to physical pain?

We recently had a child (our first) and I’m learning that getting back into the swing of things may take some time, however I don’t know when it will be comfortable enough to complete the act until we actually begin…
 
If the intent at the time of starting was to fool around and not finish, that would be problematic. If one went into the marital act willing to complete it correctly, but had to stop due to pain or some urgent issue, that would not seem tp me to be sinful, but I might discuss the situation with hour confessor to confirm.

The Church does not teach a couple must have intercourse or not touch. Couples can indeed “fool around” all they want. If you meant intercourse that included withdrawing and purposely finishing outside the woman, then I agree with you. You post had a couple of things mixed together-- at least to my mind.

What they may not do is intentionally replace the marital act with oral or manual stimulation to orgasm/ejaculation.

I reread it and saw your intent. I modified my post. Yours was a little ambiguous. No worries my posts always sound more coherent in my head than on the page.
