One of my friends was mad that he had to take off his hat in Church and said “tell me where in the bible it says I can’t wear a hat in Church” and proceeded to bash the Church. Although the conversation ended, I did not have an answer to give. How can you answer a question like that which technically is not grounded in a fundamental Church teaching? My first instinct would be to say “its a sign of respect which humans have used for the longest time, just because God did not command our heads be uncovered in Church doesn’t mean it still isn’t disrespectful”

It is tied into the tradition of 1 Cor. 11:4,7 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. … A man ought not to cover his head…

And just basic decency should respect a “when in Rome” attitude toward something like wearing a hat. If someone asks you to take off your shoes in their home, you shouldn’t demand to know what law says otherwise, unless you want to lose friends fast.

Ask him where in the bible is says we should show respect in the presence of God.

Your friend sounds very self-centered.

‘When in Rome, I do as the Romans do’ An early saint said. 😃

This doesn’t sound like a complicated argument to me. You could simply answer his question. (first Corinthians)

If your friend used this as an excuse to bash the Church, then there is more going on with your friend’s attitude towards the Church than just hat wearing.

If he does not understand the concept of respect for traditions of others (or his own if he is Catholic), then he wasn’t raised properly.

If the main problem in his life is that he can’t wear his hat in a church, there are millions of people on this planet who would give a leg or an arm to be in that position as being their only problem, and he needs to get over it, period.

If he was “mad” over this, what happens when something serious occurs?

If a person cannot even take off their hat without complaint as a sign of reverence and respect, then what exactly would they be willing to do to show respect and reverence to the Almighty?

Amen Joe, everything is not written in the Bible. Yes, we see from 1Corithians about being respectful in the presence of God, but some rules are meant for respect. Your friend is one of those that sounds to start arguments just for the sake of starting arguments.

Jeeper. I remember when a man would remove his hat when a lady was on an elevator out of respect…!
