Should there be no Lord’s prayer at Compline (both EF and OF)?
Why is this? Why omit such an important prayer?

The Lord’s Prayer is not written into Compline (or the Office of Readings, if memory serves—I don’t pray the OOR—or Midday Prayer), but nothing prevents us from praying it before starting the office or after its conclusion.

I can’t tell you why this is, but I imagine that your priest could.

No.

There is a long-standing tradition that comes from the Rule of Saint Benedict to only say the Lord’s Prayer (liturgically) 2 times per day at the Divine Office, i.e. at Lauds, and Vespers. The Mass makes up the third time. I’m not sure where this tradition of 3x per day comes from; the Rule only mentions the two times in the Divine Office.

In the Rule of Saint Benedict, in community prayer the practice at Compline (as well as the minor hours) is to say Kyrie Eleison-Christe Eleison-Kyrie Eleison; then the abbot, prior or presider intones “Pater Noster…”; then all recite the Lord’s Prayer in secret, until the presider says after an appropriate pause “et ne nos inducas in tentationem”, to which all reply “sed libera nos a malo”.

The reformed Roman Office (the LOTH), has not retained the Kyrie; one simply does not recite aloud the Lord’s Prayer at the Office of Readings, the daytime hours, or Compline.

Thank you for this explanation. Je me coucherai moins bête ce soir 😉

I’m pretty sure the general instructions for the LOTH also refer to the “3 times per day” rule as a long-standing tradition.

Now that I’ve bothered to look , I see that it does. Chapter 3, section XIb, citation 195:
The Lord’s Prayer will henceforward be solemnly recited three times a day; that is, at Mass, Lauds and Vespers.

I really like those silent prayers.
I guess I prefer the monastic Office.
Where do I find it (with chants included)?

You’ll need the Monastic Antiphonary (post-VII, Volumes and III) and the Liber Hymnarius to be able to chant everything, every day, however. You can also find them on the Solesmes site.

Volume II of the Monastic Antiphonary also includes the psalms for the day hours. However some of the, umm, improvements are anything but. Stick to Psalterium Monasticum, plus it also contains the psalms for the night hour (Vigils).

If you would like to pray in Swedish you can find the Tidegärd or Kyrkans dagliga bön on www.oblates.se. Katolsk bokhandel in Stockholm has the multi volume books but it is easier to start out with using either the website or a book called Psalterium which is a shorter version for less than 100 kr.

You can see what is included in Cecilia pages 1251-1265.

Thanks nightshade! As UpUp says “je me coucherai moins niaiseux ce soir”. (Québec colloquial version of what she said, meaning “I will go to bed less stupid tonight”).

I figured someone on CAF would know. It’s the great thing about CAF when we’re not too busy bickering with each other, there’s a wealth of knowledge!
