Two questions regarding the Compline prayer: One significant, one a bit less so…
  1. In “Shorter Christian Prayer”, on the introductory page for “Night Prayer”, there is only a single line regarding hymn selection for the entire weekly cycle:
Hymn, no. 33 or 34, 42, 48-53, 99, 184
What is the appropriate practice here? Can I pick any of the above, or am I supposed to cycle through them?
  1. Grammatically speaking, do we “pray a compline”, “pray the compline”, “pray compline” or something else?

I can’t speak for the English hymns, but for the Latin:

Te lucis ante terminum is used for Advent up to the 16th of Dec., for the odd weeks of Lent, and is the normal hymn for Ordinary Time. The melody varies according to the season and for Sundays, memorials, feasts and solemnities.

Christe qui splendor is used from Dec. 16 in Advent, and for even weeks of Lent, and ad libitum in Ordinary Time; the melodies are the same as above.

Our abbey alternates between Te Lucis and Christe odd and even weeks in Ordinary Time but is not held to doing so, it is their custom.

For Eastertide, Iesu redemptor is the hymn.

If, in Christian prayer, nothing other than a selection of hymns is specified, then you’re at liberty to choose the one you want. Otherwise chose what is specified.

Normally, AFAIK, we “pray Compline”, or “say/chant Compline”.

I’ve noticed that if I pray Compline with the Universalis app they use one hymn for an entire week. In ordinary time they alternate 2 hymns during Ordinary Time. I’ve noticed a third one during Easter.

If I pray with the Divine Office app the hymn changes every day.
