If you’ve read my recent post about DH and the computer, you’ll understand this. Out of curiosity the other day, I pulled up the history toolbar on our computer and found a couple of racey websites, one shows having been visited the night before. I woke DH and brought him to the computer, pulled up the video and played it for a moment. He swears he hadn’t been on that website, and I believe him. Again, this a.m., I was tempted to view the history bar and found another website from last week (that I hadn’t seen there before, and I deleted all the ‘nasty’ ones this weekend from as far back in the history as I could go). So my question is, how did these websites get on our history if DH didn’t visit them?

Please, I only need a response to my computer question, if you wish to respond to the other topic(s) of discussion, please respond to my other posts.

Thank You

It is possible that your computer is infected with a virus, spyware or some other type of malicious software.

I read your other posts and I think your husband is trying to pull a fast one. He denies he was at those other sites, yet admits to having a late night computer addiction??? Hmmmmm

Someone sat at your computer and visited those sites. They may have reached those sites from pop up ads, but, most experienced computer users know better than to click on those kinds of banners or ads.

Does anyone else have access to your computer?

No. Man, I was really hoping it was a computer glitch. DH says our hard drive is going out, our computer constantly shuts down on its own. We had a long chat about this a few weeks ago and he was forthcoming, so I really wanted to believe him when he was so defensive the other night.

I still can’t reconcile why a website I deleted the other day would show back up on the ‘2 wks ago’ visited history.

I guess then I need your prayers.

If your computer is really shutting down unexpectedly, that could account for it. When it re-starts, it will go to the last saved information, and that could restore an old history entry. Data never goes away unless it is written over by other data, and unless your memory is really full, I can see 2-week old data coming back.

No, I’m not a computer expert, but as my last computer was crashing on me, weird things like that would happen. (Losing recent bookmarks, in my case.) The expert I hired told me the above.

By then it was too late - I hired him to extract what he could from my fried hard drive. You might want to consider getting a new computer.

Not that I am defending anyone (cause I at one time had a brief “problem” that I have triumphed over… thanks to our Heavenly Mother) but the previous post mentioned a virus. This is truely a possibility, though a small chance given his history and statements.

I was once looking around on websites at motorcycles (inocent enough…right?) Well, I clicked on something about “find a local dealer” and another window popped up… then minimized itself to the toolbar. I saw this and opened the window… I was in horror…
it was showing “DOWNLOAD COMPLETE” AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!
I knew I was in big trouble. I turned off my router and tried to figure out what had been downloaded. I found the files and deleted them. Thought I would be ok… no… and that was just the beginning.

To make a long story short… the virus that was infecting my computer was a trojan of some sort and a nasty one at that.
If I changed my security settings… it would change them to a lesser setting allowing the program to access the internet and download.
When I would bring up Internet Explorer… it would start accessing dozens of “Racey” nasty websites. I had no control over the internet.
I would try to delete the files again… and this virus would re-install itself.
I had to reboot into safe mode and go to the internet and research this thing.
I found out that what this thing does is it infected 144 of my root directories.
If I deleted the files ,even with virus software, it managed to “hide” 2 files that when you would restart your computer it would change the security settings to allow it to access the internet and download things and the other file would download all the files that you just deleted and then re install and therefore reinfect the computer.
Here’s the real kicker… the antivirus software could not recognize the “new” files as a virus because the virus would RENAME itself everytime it would download itself.
And the cycle of pop ups and filth continued until I bought Norton 360. It was the only thing that knew that those files were there and could stop them. There are still on my computer (the 2 that are hidden) For some reason they can’t be scrubbed off, but they are quarrantined and are not a problem.
Needless to say this was a huge headache for me. I too had some explaining to do with my wife but I have always been upfront and honest with her in our marriage. I showed her what this thing was doing and it was clear that this was no fault of ours.

Like I said I’m not defending anyone but I am just relaying my experience with a really nasty computer bug.

I hope you can work things out together. It sounds like it is going to be a very big uphill struggle. I will keep you in my prayers for all families.

God Bless,
Paul

One more thing to consider… Back up all your important files and photos now before something happens to your computer. Might not be a bad idea to back up other files as well in case he is hiding things and deletes incriminating things… if you know what I mean. Just get a Thumb Drive and keep it in your purse with those files backed up.

Just a thought have you blocked pop-ups…one of our computers has a problem and we get tonnes of pop-ups (even though they are blocked)…and mostly nasty stuff…

Maybe call your local “Geek Squad” and have your computer cleaned.

DH uses AVG as a virus program, it works well. A computer repair person will advise you to install and run a virus program.

First, let me start by saying that I actually am a computer expert. This is my area of expertise.

Do you have a virus checker and firewall installed? Are they active and have they been updated within the last week? If not then:

A: It is possible that some rogue program is clicking links behind the scenes to generate advertising revenue.

AND

B: You are at risk of having your identity stolen.

If you DO have a virus checker and firewall installed, active and updated, then it is still remotely possible that some spyware is on your computer doing this. However, this is so incredibly unlikely that I would sooner expect that you would receive a letter from NASA saying you will be on the next Space Shuttle mission. Possible, but not likely.

I would recommend installing an internet filter like NetNanny (get it here.). Furthermore, it is YOU and YOU ALONE that should have the password to it. I use NetNenny and it does not interfere with normal and legitimate web use all all. If you DH balks at this, tell him that you need to install it to prevent the “rogue program” from going to those sites; use his story against him.

It’s unlikely that rogue programs are causing problems, but it is possible. When it comes to computers, anything is possible. You may want to reformat your computer hard drive or opt to firewall and antivirus it.

personalfirewall.comodo.com/ - Free firewall

And as others said here, AVG is also another good free software for antivirus.

Cheers

I think your PC has a virus or spyware too. I would give DH the benefit of the doubt this time.

Seriously? Windows is so full of holes that even the best firewalls and anti viruses miss things. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t, its just that they do and its not that rare. Most malware is installed packaged to some type of file or game downloaded so the scanners think its legit when its not. At least that’s how its been with the last two desktops my family has owned. Which is why I chose the easiest solution. I switched to Linux.

Most experienced computer users know how to empty the “history” folder too. Unless Hubby is a complete novice, I’d bet on pop ups or spyware.

I don’t know which would be worse - having a spouse who was hooked on internet porn or one who would consider installing NetNanny on my computer. Neither one sounds like much of a bargain.

Hey just a quick addition to this post - I responded to your other one.

But in regard to the computer listing filthy sites - my husband’s computer did that. And I know he wasn’t looking at porn because he has a very strong aversion to it. Also, when he donated his computer to a young family we still were unable to remove the filth from it and had to donate it with the warning that it would need a computer technician to remove whatever virus was downloading pornographic words.

It wasn’t just pornographic sites - it was filthy words in the search engine memory, filthy words in the recently viewed files history and other wierd things like that.

So don’t make a decision until you get someone to look at your computer. You should definitely do what the previous poster said and get your files backed up and the rest of it dealt with by a professional.

If it turns out to be a virus, then the timing is simply bad! It’s quite possible that if your husband did fall a few times and visit dodgy sites, that is where the virus was picked up.

Good luck,
xxx
