So I’ve been ‘trying out’ the rosary using a computer program which is great because it tells me what to pray. My question is there any difference between a virtual computer rosary and a real one?

Also, since I’m new at this, are there any tips or guidance that you might have about making the rosary more meaningful or effective? thanks!

It’s not the method you use to count the prayers that has any bearing. It’s the prayers themselves. You have to answer that question yourself. If what you are doing distracts you from the prayers, then you shouldn’t do it; if it truly helps you then it’s fine.

Remember to think about the Mysteries themselves as you pray. It’s not just about saying a set number of prayers, it’s about meditating on the events themselves.

Hope that helps.

also second question: does it matter if I split up the prayer over the whole day or should I do it all at once?

FrDavid,

Very helpful. Thanks so much. I think it helps me more than distracts at this point since I don’t know the prayers.

say it all at once…or break it up. it does not matter, if time is a problem for you its better to do a single decade every now and then(takes about 4 minutes) than not do it at all because you dont have at least 20 mins to spare.

i believe (not fully sure) that if you wish to obtain an indulgence, you have to say it all at once…

That’s realy up to you. I would say that each decade/Mystery should be done as a whole, but I don’t see anything wrong with spreading it out over a period of time; in fact it’s a pious practice to do just that–pray a single decade of the Rosary.

I am sure there are sites out there that show images of the Mysteries as the Rosary is being said. The Jesuits have a number of really nice online prayer sites. It seems like using the computer/internet for prayer (and Godly discussions) is sort of like reclaiming something that has become an all too easy source of sin.

One of my friends made me a “memory rosary” out of nylon cord & plastic beads. There are 3 “arms” to it. One has 4 beads for the 4 different mysteries, one has 5 beads on it for the mysteries I am praying, and one has 10 beads for the decade. If you know someone who is good with beads/crafts, they might be able to make one like it for you. As you finish a prayer/decade/mystery, you slide the appropriate bead. If you have to stop for whatever reason, you’ll find your place based on where the bead is. I’ve looked online & can’t find what I’m describing. Essentially, it’s 2 cords and a bead that slides.

I’ll try to see if she can give me directions, if you like.
