This morning at Mass I noticed something that I’d never seen before…our Priest had on chalice on the Alter and a decanter of wine on the side of the Alter, then after the concecration of the bread and wine, just before communion an EMHC took the decanter (hope that’s the correct word) and poured it out into four different challices and handed those out to our weekly army of EMHCs…I thought that glass wasnt supposed to be used when concecrating wine…also I thought that after the concecration had taken place there shouldn’t be any “pouring” into other challices because of the risk of spilling some of the Precious Blood.

Am I way off base here? I’m thinking that maybe the Priest didn’t notice what was going on? But why would he have left the wine in the giant glass/crystal decanter? I figure I’ll ask about it if it happens next week.

You’re…right!

“Reprobated…is any practice of using for the celebration of Mass common vessels, or others lacking in quality, or devoid of all artistic merit or which are mere containers, as also other vessels made from glass, earthenware, clay, or other materials that break easily.”
(Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum 117)

“[T]he pouring of the Blood of Christ after the consecration from one vessel to another is completely to be avoided, lest anything should happen that would be to the detriment of so great a mystery.”

(Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum 106)

Yes, the wine should be poured into different chalices* before * the consecration. I think that is a relatively recent change in the rubrics though. Maybe somebody just didn’t get the word.

Yes, the changes are recent and we are trying to implement them in our parish. There are lots of logistics to the changes - who moves what where and how.

However, I am surprised the the “flaggon” was not on the altar during the consecration - like the way it has been done in many parishes for many years. With it’s being off the altar / corporal and on the credence table, was it really consecrated?

please ignore that comment - you said the side of the altar - my mistake.

never mind!!

I suppose it could be brought up in glass, but must be poured into an appropriate chalice or chalices before consecration.

someone correct me if I am wrong but I remember setting up for mass for years and only the bread and wine that are on the corporal are actually consecrated not if they are on the side of the altar, unless of course that is where the bread and chalice of wine were.

Ok…this same thing is continuing to happen…I think I’ll talk to the Priest and see what he has to say…just incase is it Redemptionis Sacramentum that contains the rules on pouring? Is it the Code of Cannon Law has the rules on crystal? Finally anything else I should do?

the new instructions do clarify the procedure for preparing the gifts, pouring the wine into chalices before consecration, and purifying the vessels (among other things). The timing of implementing the instructions is up to the bishop and the priest, some were waiting for Advent, some for translation into English or other reason, or waiting until all those involved in liturgy could be trained.
