Why is the purpose of having a Mass concelebrated? How did this practice start?

Thanks.

I think one possible explanation is that priests are, to my understanding, actually obliged to say Mass every day when possible. And also I think that at least since Vatican 2 a priest cannot say Mass without at least one other person present (although I may be wrong here), so the easiest way for priests to fulfil both of these requirements is to celebrate it together (concelebrate).

Priests were at one time under the old code of Canon Law to celebrate Mass every day brfore noon. When we had sometimes 4 and 5 priests living in the parish rectory with one morning Mass and maybe a school Mass. The other 2 or 3 priests whould need to celebrate Mass on side altars while the people were there. This was difficult with 2 or 3 different Masses going on in the same space. Liturgical reforms after Vatican II, not necessarly because of Vatican II, allowed several priests to celebrate the same Mass on the same altar. Concelebration.

Concelebration is a beautiful experience. My great-uncle is a priest, so at my grampa’s, and his brother’s funerals, there were 17 and 20 priests and bishops concelebrating 😃

I remember this, vividily, trying not to watch the priest at St. Joseph’s altar, while I was supposed to be watching the priest at the main altar during the daily school Mass.
