It is thought that soul is fused into material, sperm and egg, at the time of conception. After that we have cell divisions and a person. In some rare case the first division leads into two separate cells which this leads into two different person. Of course two person have two souls. This however leads to a problem since one soul cannot turn into two soul at the time of cell division.

That’s right. A soul cannot subdivide. One has to consider that a new soul is created when twinning occurs.

You’re thinking of the soul as some spiritual but material component of the person. It should also be noted that as the cells divide, they form a ring of cells that do not turn into the embryo but into the sac surrounding the embryo as well as the placenta. It’s actually the embryonic stem cells that exclusively become the body of the embryo.

I think many people think they’ve got it all figured out, but in actuality, I don’t think the Church has a definitive answer except in a very clear condemnation of abortion. I wouldn’t worry about it beyond that.

The problem is that the time of twin occurrence, when you have two persons, is later than the time of conception, when soul is infused. So we are talking about impossibility.

The souls should somehow subdivide if they are infused. Does it happen naturally or God does that too? What about this? Does God guide sperms too or the process is random or based on laws of nature or somewhere between?

Souls do not subdivide. God infuses the newly conceived babies (single celled or otherwise)with however many souls He determines will be present.

Are you positing that two persons – distinct from the first person – are produced?

Or are you positing that a second person is produced?

If the former, then you’ll need to provide some sort of rationale for that assertion. If the latter, then no problem exists: when a second person comes into being, a second soul is created by God.

Is what you are saying is position of Church?

No, what I’m doing is asking where you see the problem. If a second person is created (with the first person remaining), then there’s no problem. If you’re claiming that the original person ceases to exist and two new persons come into existence… well, then you’ll have to provide some evidence that this is the case. 😉

You have one cell and one soul. That is the moment of conception. That is the starting. You then have two cells when each develop into one person. Where and when the second soul comes into play?

God knows and decides well before conception even takes place that twins will be the result. So at the moment of a twin conception, before cell division, two souls are infused by God.

Not an impossibility, not a problem, and the Church has no specific position on the matter. But we do know that at whatever point a new and distinct individual of the human species comes into existence, God infuses a soul.

The exact point/time of ensoulment is something that is an open question.

Of course twin human beings will each have their own eternal soul, we can only guess at what point this occurs.

The church has always taught that life begins at conception. That’s when a new soul is created. Not at cell division.

In general, yes. But, in this case, at conception, there is only one human who is created. The Church doesn’t believe that God creates souls prior to the existence of the human person.

Simple: when the second person comes into existence, so does the second soul.

It’s not a matter of God being limited to only creating souls at the moment of conception! Rather, the theology is that, once a person exists (which normally occurs at the moment of conception), that person has a soul which is immediately (i.e., not mediated by any other person) created by God.

In your example, the moment at which the second person comes into existence is the moment the twin exists. Therefore, that’s the moment that the twin’s soul is created.

Life and ensoulment may begin at the same moment or they may happen at different times. The Church has not declared when ensoulment takes place.
