Concern about Coronavirus

We cannot live in a bubble, but can take reasonable precautions. Hand washing, avoiding physical contact, staying home when you aren’t well…all help. Perhaps we should be more vigilant about cleaning holy water fonts regularly. Is it ok to chlorinate holy water a bit? Any stagnant water is not generally sanitary. I have my little bottle… I could use that instead of the font, we all could.

But frankly, if we reach status of this epidemic like China, I will watch mass from home on TV until the crisis passes. God asks a lot of us, including being prudent. My elderly mother depends on me, so I go to every effort to be well so I can be with her.

What we shouldn’t do is have fits if a bishop or priest asks that we abstain from hand holding, hand shaking and communion on the tongue to do what reasonably can be done to prevent mass from being an unsafe place. I have heard such fits and it really is goofy. The priests and bidhops run the mass, and we need to comply.

I am more concerned about the flu personally I the US, though I am near a major city and the Corona virus certainly will come here.

Don’t worry about the coronavirus. It’s just a story getting hyped up in the media to drive ratings and page views. As others have stated, normal strains of the flu are much more dangerous and kill far more people each year than the coronavirus ever will. Remember how SARS was supposed to kill us all? Yeah, me neither.
The fact is we have no idea how serious any new strain of coronavirus will be. Epidemics in the past have destroyed huge percentages of the population. You have absolutely no basis to say that ‘normal strains’ of the flu are far more dangerous. No one ever said SARS would kill us all. It was identified as a potentially dangerous virus and steps taken to contain it. By treating new virus in this way we protect peoples lives. The precautions that have been advised but he Chinese government and WHO are entirely reasonable. Anything less would be irresponsible. Even if this virus is as dangerous and as uncontrolled as the black death it will not kill us all. But there is a serious and constant risk, based on the mortality from previous outbreaks, of 20-40% of those in affected areas dying.

It is scary to see comments saying Coronavirus is just a “media hype” or “another flu”…

That really shows how the public awareness is still low … I think the church cannot rely on individuals to take precaution because the people aren’t aware of how dangerous this virus is.

Don’t be scare. China has 23 millions abortions yearly, 67% Chinese are atheists, 95% or more worshiped deities. Top of the world.

CDC announced only 5% people went to US from Wuhan had infections. From this small sample, with population 10 millions people in Wuhan, figure out the result by yourself.

In another approach, CDC also revealed only 20% people contact the infected get infections or about one spreading virus to three people. So, with 9 Chinese who got infected since Dec 8 while the lock down of Wuhan city started from Jan 23, figure out by yourself.

Let wait and see the news from 400 American evacuees just came back from Wuhan yesterday and today so we can have better idea.

May God bless us and our country.
