What is with the leftist talk of the USCCB? Can you tell I just watched “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” from EWTN? 🤣 Seriously - - I am appalled.

" 4) Institutional Change – CCHD’s mission “is to address the root causes of poverty in the U.S.” In Catholic Social Teaching, the causes of poverty are understood to be an aspect of “social sin” rooted in our social and economic structures and institutions. In their economics pastoral, the bishops of the United States describe “A New American Experiment” that calls for “an imaginative vision of the future that can help shape economic arrangements in creative new ways.” (295) This will require alternative economic structures that will “expand economic participation, broaden the sharing of economic power, and make economic decisions more accountable to the common good.” (297)"

What in the world is wrong with this?

Do you think it is wrong to address poverty?

That was one of the main concerns of Christ…

It is not “Leftist” but Christian.

…and especially Catholic, for anyone who is familiar with Catholic social teaching, especially since the 19th century onward.

The CCHD has been closely tied to causes championed by the media, and silent on all else. It is almost an arm of the Democratic Party.

A few funded agencies have been identified as pro choice, or pro gay marriage.

I have never watched the Wolf in Sheep Clothing. We should help the poor, there is no doubt about that, and that is a dogma. We can differ on how we do that.

In my opinion the emphasis on what the real problem is in our Country differs from what the CCHD stresses. The CCHD states “CCHD will not consider organizations which promote or support violence, racism, sexism, or other prejudices, in any form.” There is a big hang up on racism, and while even if one looks online we can see lots of racist comments on social media, but there is no institutional racism. People of all colors play sports, and win political office, and so on. Dont get me wrong racism should be addressed, but not at the expense of overlooking even more damaging sins that plague our country. Racism is just a smokescreen for us not paying attention to the bigger problems, such as same sex marriage, homosexuality, gender ideology, radical feminism, contraception, and abortion.

Another thing is as the reading for morning prayer states today:
Short Reading 1 Peter 4:10-11
Each one of you has received a special grace, so, like good stewards responsible for all these different graces of God, put yourselves at the service of others. If you are a speaker, speak in words which seem to come from God; if you are a helper, help as though every action was done at God’s orders; so that in everything God may receive the glory, through Jesus Christ, since to him alone belong all glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.

So everyone has special gifts, and if one wants to devote their lives to helping of the poor they are doing Gods work.

One one more note, it would be interesting to see where the money in the CCHD. Hopefully to good Catholic causes.

I tried to find this EWTN film but it must be in film about Saul Alinksy, Wolf in Sheeps Clothing. So if the CCHD is still working in the spirit of Alinsky tactics, then yes this would not be good.

From Life Site News:
"Alinsky associates within the Church developed the Campaign for Human Development for the U.S. Bishops’ Conference as the Conference’s anti-poverty program.

The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, then USCCB General Secretary, told the Bishops’ Conference that Alinsky’s organizing was “the best process and rationale for organizing people.”

The bishops approved the plan in 1970 and the first national collection was taken in November of that year, netting $8.5 million, the largest in Church history at the time.

The program continues today, now known as the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), which in part [funded Barack Obama’s training in community organizing."

Yes, the CCHD is a problematic ministry of the USCCB. Various local dioceses may fare better. See also the Lepanto Institute’s investigation into problematic and un-catholic organizations that the CCHD has funded:

I haven’t seen the ‘Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’ from EWTN yet but I definitely want to see it.

There have been numerous problematic grants from the CCHD over the years. They are well known to have issued grants to various groups that promote causes against Church teaching, including abortion, women’s ordination, gay marriage, etc. I wouldn’t hold it against anyone if they chose not to donate when collections are held in their parish. A number of bishops stopped collecting for CCHD in their dioceses years ago due to the numerous anti-Catholic causes it was supporting, though I am guessing that the majority still participate.

Does anyone know if all the bishops are on board with this? Are there some that are not enthralled with this community organizing stuff?

Regarding the statement, economics is more about the means than the goals. One person might want to help poor people by raising the minimum wage, another might want to help poor people by lowering the minimum wage. Same goals, different economics

Sigh.

Call your Diocese. Ask for the list of grant recipients from your CCHD.

The anti-Catholicism that sneaks into Catholic media in some political circles is so passé.

Hmmm. I could find 2010 online, but not any other year. For a while on our diocesan website, we had a “Social Justice office”. Now it’s gone from the website, and I believe the woman in charge moved to a different organization. So is it really gone, or is it just hidden?
Some of these look non-objectionable, and some seem like they might be iffy. However, it’s interesting to note that only 25% stays local:
In South Bend
• Our Lady of Hungary School — a $1,000 education grant for English Language Learner Instruction for students and adults
• St. Augustine Church — an $850 education grant to support and sustain its African-American Tutor Program

In Elkhart
• St. Vincent de Paul Parish — a $4,000 community organizing grant to provide English classes for Hispanic parishioners

In Fort Wayne
• Catholic Charities — a $3,000 community organizing grant to help support its Immigration Program
• Vincent Village, Inc. — a $3,000 community organizing grant to provide leadership training for members of the Tenant Council
• The Volunteer Center at RSVP — a $3,000 community organizing grant for the support of its Multi-Lingual Free Income Tax Preparation Project

The annual CCHD collection will be taken-up on the Nov. 21 weekend in all parishes of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. A total of 25 percent of the donations stay in the diocese for local/area distribution through selected grant applications, approved by Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades.

In my personal experience most poor-er people in the US are poor-er because of choices they’ve made. Not because of an outside power holding them back. I’ve seen people be given jobs, housing, and all the assistance they could be given, throw it all away because getting up and getting to that job on time is just too much effort.
You must not know too many people. At least not too many poor people. The poor people I know, for the most part, are that way due to lack of education and or ability. It is not due to poor choices. Many of them have more children than they can afford to take care of. Again, as a result of ignorance. Nobody wakes up one morning and says gee I hope I can be poor today. People struggle. And not by choice.

I hope you are not poor now, and that you will never be poor.

What is the major cause of child poverty?

Being born to parents who are not married. Is this ever addressed by the bishops?

Wow - - where are the teachings of Jesus there? “shaping economic arrangements in creative new ways”? What is meant by that? Seriously.

It’s hard to track exactly where the money goes. For instance, money might go to an agency that seems harmless, but it shares office space, and even staff, with another agency that is pro abortion.

Or an agency that is not focused on abortion itself is part of an interagency consortium that is.

Almost all agencies that include “community organizing” are, in a way, campaigning/recruiting for the Democratic Party. Staff must attend fund raisers for their politician supporter, almost always tied to a pro abortion Party.

So it’s likely much CCHD money indirectly benefits the pro abortion, pro gay marriage movement.

I personally don’t give to diocesan or bishop’s organizations that are fighting poverty. It’s not that I object to fighting poverty, but I have little idea where the money is going and usually the advertising for such funds is pretty fluffy stuff.

I prefer to give directly to whatever agency or group is directly working on an initiative I support. For example I can donate directly to a Catholic-run home for pregnant, homeless moms. Or directly to some specific anti-poverty fundraiser on a site like Missio.org . Or to the St. Vincent de Paul society, or to the Norbertine food kitchen, etc. I have much more confidence in doing that than giving to the big general funds where some percentage is likely eaten up by staff and administration.

What I was saying in an earlier post about the smokescreen of racism, using racism for political gain is a Saul Akinsky tactic to agitate and create political divide and political takeover.

Oh, I will complain if I think that the CHD is supporting causes that are antithetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Wouldn’t you think that needs to be exposed?

Yes, but you’re not exposing it. You are just casting your suspicions. If you want to expose a certain cause that is anti-catholic, then do it honestly.
