There is something which has troubled me greatly throughout this year. My mother passed away in January and since then, from time to time, I become greatly distressed at the thought of the suffering which she may be undergoing in Purgatory. I know that Purgatory is God’s justice tempering his mercy, as I think Our Lord said to Saint Faustina, but sometimes I cannot rid myself of the awareness of how she may be suffering.
Since January I have had the Gregorian Thirty said for her. I have also enrolled her with the Purgatorian Archconfraternity (Transalpine Redemptorists) as part of a family enrolment, and enrolled her as a deceased member of the Friends Of The Suffering Souls.
Has anyone ever experienced such fears and if so, have these feelings allayed as time goes by?

There is no need to have such fears because God is merciful and just. Each soul in purgatory is undergoing no more and no less than it needs for its purification. And so, each soul wouldn’t have it any other way. The souls in purgatory are happy to go through this cleansing process because it brings them that much closer to the Beatific Vision, which is union with God. Our prayers help this process and they are grateful for them. So, allay your fears and continue to pray for your mother. :console: I will also remember her in my prayers today. :crossrc:

Just keep going to Mass for her. If she is not in Purgatory, then this helps someone else.

Also remember that Purgatory is non-temporal and as such there is no “duration” of suffering, in the manner that we understand.

We should rejoice rather than lament, because the end result of purgation is eternal salvation not eternal damnation.

In one sense, souls in purgatory are in a better position than the faithful on earth, because their Hope has been realized, and ours is stir speculative.

The fires of purgatory are purifying rather than punishing.

This is not to say we should not pray for those souls, or for anyone who is not yet sainted.
