Sure. But do you think it can’t happen in the USA? If not - why not? Is the USA essentially different from other countries? No one hauling anyone away. Geez louise.
It is different. …it was founded to be different. The US is not a theocracy. …look how well the Inquisition worked out…and the Jonesville suicides in SA 30 odd years ago. The Crusades…and even your mythick religions ie the Greeks…Romans…Norse. Religious organizations start out as lo in and accepting. …then human nature takes over…and it turns Orwell Ian Animal Farm. 99% of the time people turn away from faith because their leaders got caught with their hand in the cookie jar…or in someone’s pants. Again the human element. Look how well the Middle East’s Muslims are doing…they instill fear through violence and interpret their doctrine to perpetuate this among the people who have little means or education. The splinter groups insist that women are 2nd class citizens and don’t allow education or free thought because the patriarchs of their faith ate in fear that an educated woman and an educated group of faithful will see what is really going on. This what has happened to a certain extent to Catholics. …American in the last century and yes to the evangelicals as well. Most of the immigrants who came here are Catholuc…they wanted better for their children…the US provided that in the form of education. Women were affected long before Betty thought about the feminine mystique. My grandmother in the south was not allowed to vote…imagine that. And her preacher said women do not belong in the policy world… yeah that was in the early part of the last century. Positive change for the faithful comes from within and spreads outward… If you want a country run by relugion…planes fly to the Middle East everyday.Sure. But do you think it can’t happen in the USA? If not - why not? Is the USA essentially different from other countries?
Totalitarianism happens all the time. Why can’t people recognise that historical fact? Very sophisticated countries ended up in it. Why is the USA different? A document open to interpretation is what gives you a sense of security. How can that give anyone hope is beyond me.
Sure it was. But … so what? Things change. Just look at how a few people have found something in the Constitution and decided to impose their interpretation on the whole country. Just like that. You think the founding fathers would approve of this? Is this what they had in mind? I somehow doubt it.It is different. …it was founded to be different.
Politics has always been about power. I agree with you that human nature is what it is and I cited examples of it with regard to organized religion. Lots of politics in there. I do see changes within from Pope Francis…as the spiritual leader of our faith he is meeting politics head on…and working to bring the faithful together within their communities… … ah yes the facade is fancy…and our founding fathers worked with what they had at the time with laws and policies they had at the time…essentially what Jesus had to work with…which were Caesars laws and the laws of the Pharisees…Sure it was. But … so what? Things change. Just look at how a few people have found something in the Constitution and decided to impose their interpretation on the whole country. Just like that. You think the founding fathers would approve of this? Is this what they had in mind? I somehow doubt it.
And what about human nature? You don’t see the struggle for power in politics? You think just because the USA was founded to be different it can’t collapse under ambition and power games?
Power is power. It intoxicates people, makes them want more. So for that reason I disagree: the USA is essentially like any other country. The façade may be a bit more fancy, that’s all.
