Concerned about liturgical abuses by our priest

Hi all. I was wondering if you have any ideas…

Our priest made the following changes / omissions…
  1. He changes the doxology to the statement… “For it is through Jesus Christ and with him and in along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit that we give all praise, glory, and honor… worship and adoration… at this celebration… and forever and ever”
  2. He does not wash his hands and omits the prayer that is normally said during that gesture.
  3. He does the first blessing over the blessed sacraments in a combined form… something like… “Blessed are you Lord God of all creation… through your goodness we have this bread AND wine to offer…”
  4. He occaisionally cuts out the creed on our Sunday mass “for the sake of time”.
  5. He changed our Advent vestments, candles, and banners to blue rather than purple.
  6. He tells highly inappropriate jokes instead of attempting to give a meaningful sermon. For example, he compared Jesus to the ground hog at Easter. A couple of weeks ago he told a joke about how Mary always appears solemn in pictures and statues because she had hoped to give birth to a girl.
I took Father Serpa’s advice and contacted my Bishop and our diocesan vocations director. For a while, Father seemed to be making an effort to perform a proper mass. Maybe our bishop talked to him about it. Lately, he has fallen back into old habits. Where do I go next? In this time of terrible shortages of priests in our diocese, it feels like the Bishop is willing to overlook this stuff to keep a priest down here. I know that I can go to another church, but it hurts me to know that this is going on in my home parish. I want to do something!

Thoughts?

Some ideas …

Write the priest a letter, quoting the 2004 Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum: “[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.”

Bring a tribunal case against the prist for breaching the Code of Canon Law, canon 846 “The liturgical books, approved by the competent authority are to be faithfully followed in the celebration of the sacraments.”

Buy the priest books, such as “How Not to Say Mass” by Dennis Smolarski S.J.

Get a job in the parish that makes you more influential, gives more scope for communicating your dissatisfaction. For example: sacristan, altar server, part of liturgy committee.

Be part of social groups, invite the priest for meals, again to find ways to communicate the dissatisfaction.

Write more complaints to the bishop, perhaps also to the Vatican.

Collect evidence of the abuses, consider options to use them.

Many of you gave me advice for how to deal with omissions and possible abuses by my parish priest. Last week, I sent him a letter addressing these problems. Here is the letter (minus some of the quoted content for size sake…

Dear Father ***:

For some time now, I have contemplated what I should do about my feelings concerning your masses. Before I go any farther, let me thank you for answering God’s call and devoting your life to helping his people. It is clear that you have a deep care for the people of your parishes, however, I often leave your mass feeling saddened about the lack of seriousness and reverence you show toward our Church. A priest once told me, “There is nothing more important on this earth than what happens on that altar at every mass.” As my faith deepened and I began to understand the gravity of those words, I started having trouble with your mass.

There are a number of things that I have recognized in your mass that do not fit the guidelines of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), the Redemptionis Sacramentum (RS), and / or Canon Law. I am quite concerned about the following…

1.Your omission of the Lavabo (Washing of hands) and accompanying prayer. - GIRM 76.

2.Your frequent changing of the doxology to a statement about God (“For it is through Jesus Christ and with Him and in Him, along with God the Holy Spirit, that we give all praise, glory, and honor, worship and adoration, at this celebration of the Eucharist… and forever and ever”), rather than to Him.

3.Your occasional skipping of the Creed during Sunday services “for the sake of time”. – GIRM 68.

4.Your changing of the Advent color to blue. GIRM - 346.

5.Your shortening of the Lord’s Prayer. GIRM – 81.

6.The breaking of the bread should be done carefully and reverently, so that particles are not scattered about. It clearly disturbs many people that you harshly “crack” the host while turning to give communion to your EMHCs… with little regard to the fact that fragments are certainly falling to the floor.

7.According to the GIRM (around #162), the priest should receive both species of the Eucharist before the EMHC’s receive either.

8.Finally, I find many of your jokes told during the homily to be very distasteful. I was appalled that you compared our Savior to the Groundhog Day groundhog during your Easter homily. I was also very saddened by your joke a few weeks ago about Mary looking sad in all of the statues and paintings because she “wanted to have a girl”. Your homily is a fantastic opportunity to nourish all of us who thirst for meaningful lessons about loving and serving God. Please do not pander to those who simply don’t want to hear that they need to change their ways and live holier lives. - RS67

It is clear that you know many of the changes and omissions you make are wrong, since you do not make them when another priest or our bishop is concelebrating the mass. According to other priests and many Vatican documents, some of these changes and omissions are very grave matters. Redemptionis Sacramentum 183 sums up why I have decided to bring up these problems. In addition Canon Law #846 states: “" Finally, Redemptionis Sacramentum 59 says: "

Father, I beg that you make a better effort to follow the traditions and guidelines of our Church. These rules are obviously in place to protect the sacraments by ensuring a uniformity and stability that hinder more severe changes. I worry very much about the example that is being set for our parish families. If you bend the rules and do not give your faith a serious appearance, what does that show our youth who may already have a shaky faith at best? I am sure that our diocese provides you with all of the documents I have mentioned, but if not, they can be easily obtained online or at a local Catholic bookstore.

My hope is that you do not take this letter to mean you any ill will. I am simply genuinely concerned about our Sacred Liturgy. I have the utmost faith that you will do your best to correct the problem areas of your mass.

May God bless you always!

Sincerely,
A concerned member of your flock

I am pleased to announce that I noticed some efforts at his mass last Sunday to improve things. He did the Our Father and the doxology properly and broke the bread much more reverently. In addition, his homily was much improved. There is still work to be done, but I am thankful that he took my letter to heart and is making an effort. Thanks to all of you… particularly Seminarian Matthew… for your help!

Assuming he keeps up things well, I’d suggest sending a follow up thank you note eventually. It doesn’t have to be much, just a short, “Dear Father, I’ve noticed your sincere efforts (perhaps in response to the concerns I have recently expressed) and just wanted to take the time to say Thank You!”

Definitely send a note as soon as possible. And more importantly, make it known that you are available to help Father out with whatever the parish needs. Let him know that you are there and available to volunteer for whatever is needed. Maybe invite him over for dinner, as well and get to know him.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Will you let us know if he responds to the letter directly? Thanks, -B.

I offer a loud, unreserved HURRAY!
Good job, Online Knight. If Don Quixote were real, he’d be so inspired by and proud of you!

Most of the things you mentioned are liturgical variations, not abuses. The color of vestments at advent for example. Making explicit that “through Him” means “through Jesus Christ.” It has been noted that “liturgical abuses” such as you have cited have occured during Papal Masses. The GIRM is not canon law; it is an instruction.
If these things bother you so much, why are you not currently studying for ordination? If they are so important to you, you should be doing something yourself, not whining to others that you’re unhappy. Get a life.

Matt, Buddy … come on now.

The OP shared a letter s/he wrote to the pastor. I think it’s very appropriate to discuss matters of concern with ones pastor. I am sure you would agree to that, right? So s/he DID do something about it, action was taken. And it seems that those actions have bore positive results.

As a fine upstanding CAForum Annoyance Member in good standing I gotta tell ya, “Get a life” is just not good form.

First of all, I’ve got a life! I am committed to my vocation as a married father and my profession as a teacher… so I don’t understand why you jump to personal attacks and the whole studying for ordination thing.

Secondly, They are very important to me… and did I not do something myself about it?

Thirdly, you apparently do not understand that how he says the doxology (not just the “through Jesus Christ” part) changes it so that it is no longer a statement made to God. If you want to comment on it so crudely, read my post / letter a little more carefully.

Finally Canon Law #846 states: “The liturgical books, approved by the competent authority are to be faithfully followed in the celebration of the sacraments.” Translation… the GIRM is an instruction that is to be followed.

Redemptionis Sacramentum 183 – In an altogether particular manner, let everyone do all that is in their power to ensure that the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist will be protected from any and every irreverence or distortion and that all abuses be thoroughly corrected. This is a most serious duty incumbent upon each and every one, and all are bound to carry it out without any favoritism.

I sought help from others here and wrote that letter because I care deeply for the mass and the Church. Clearly, you do not share that love… I’m sorry.

Your response was OK until this point. Then you had to go and discredit everything else you said by trashing the OP. Just how do you think that helped anything?

I’ve heard that joke before. I really hope we’re not in the same archdiocese. 😉

One last exciting followup…

I sent a copy of my original letter to our priest and the thankyou that I sent him later to our bishop. Yesterday, I received a personal letter from our bishop! He thanked me for my love of the liturgy and for trying to help correct some of the issues. He told me that he was happy that my initial letter resulted in some changes and reassured me that he will stay vigilant in his most important job… educating our diocesan priests about the proper way to conduct the sacraments.

Very exciting!

I second that! There’s always a naysayer around. We should all care about obedience, reverence, etc. Keep up the good work! 👍

I don’t know what happened!!! Yesterday, Father reverted back to his old ways in almost everything that I addressed and he previously corrected. Now I don’t know what to do. It hurt me to sit through his mass yesterday. Is it time to give up? What should I do?

Help!😦
