My family and I were at mass this past sunday when I woman gave my wife an article which was highlighted discussing how to dress appropriately for mass. The lady claimed that she had been passing them around but I only noticed 5 other copies passed out. The article basically said that there should be no skin exposed as it could “…lead men to sin in church…” My wife is always self-conscious about how she dresses and she was not dressed in an inappropriate manner during mass. This action really upset me because it singled my wife out and if it was an issue, then she should have made it an announcemen tto the ENTIRE congregation not a few selected people. After all we are on body in Christ.

Now, help me out here please. Are we supposed to genuflect because no one does at this parish. Are we supposed to take communio on the tongue because most take it in the hand AND to my knowledge, the only reason why it started with placing the communion in the hand was because a priest with parkinson’s disease would shake alot therefore it was allowed. Also, there is supposed to be revered silence when mass is over right? Because everyone starts talking away even before the priest walks out. PLease give me some insight on these things because rather than this lady be preoccupied with how my wife dresses, she should really address these other issues i mention above, Please help.

sounds as if the concern is not how Mass is celebrated at your parish, but with the actions–entirely out of bounds–by one lady, who seemed to take it upon herself to expostulate to people about their mode of dressing, and I doubt very much she had the approval of the pastor. I would report her to the pastor so she can be stopped. (she may be mentally unbalanced).

If Mass is celebrated, including distribution of communion, according to the norms of the bishops of your country and diocese, there is no problem there.

From what you have written it seems that the well meaning lady had reason to be concerned about the reverence shown at Mass. Sometimes well meaning people can be in error themselves for not getting permission to pass out or leave articles and hand written chain letter devotions in church. Your wife is self-conscious about how she dresses and would not dress inappropriately for church so no need to worry about it. But you could mention it to the pastor that someone was passing out this article at church.

Your post made me smile. I am seeing the old lady seeing a bit more of the flesh of your wife and thinking on all the sins of the men at mass … but she was missing mass.

Otherwise, what does she know about men’s reaction to women’s flesh? You need to be a man to know that! The poor lady has nothing to worry about, so you giving her something to do!!

You must careful with religion. Did you know that in Israel every week they send a tourist back home for he thinks that he is Kind David, Salomon, John the Baptist, and so on. If you are not balanced in religion, you may get with your reasoning not functioning well.

No, communion in hand is common in most countries of Europe where I traveled, though in Germany they are more traditionalists.

As for talking after mass, it is common since the Middle Ages but … outside the Churches. The fairs started so, after masses.

As for genuflection, it started in the Old Times but with deep bow, like the Muslims do, with head to the floor and mitigated with genuflection. Some parishes never genuflect. Russian Lithurgy is always standing for … 6 hours …

Small little things of the Great People of God.

No, they used their hands at the last supper as well as in the early Church.

I would sincerely doubt that the pastor knew about this. If it were a problem, it should have been an announcement at the end of mass. It sounds like she’s appointed herself to be the liturgical police… and on that note…

Arnold, Arnold, Arnold,

You have appointed yourself to the the liturgy police as well! Isn’t that one woman enough of a problem in the worship and communion of others without needing help?

Genuflection depends on whether or not the tabernacle is present at the front of the church. You genuflect as you pass in front of the tabernacle. So basically, it depends on the situation as to whether or not one is supposed to genuflect.

The norm for taking communion is on the tongue while kneeling… however, the allowed forms include taking communion on the tongue standing as well as receiving in the hand. The idea that it started because of a priest with parkinson’s is an old wives tale.

Reverant silence should be observed after communion, and as a matter of polity the members of the congregation who wish to fellowship with one another should step into the entryway before having conversations (following the exit hymn). However, this is not a direct abuse per se, even if it is slightly rude to those wishing to remain and pray.

Pay attention to the mass, Arnold, and stop calling out “abuses” that you perceive in others. I can’t think of any reason that one who has taken the Eucharist and should be praying and meditating would be critiqueing others’ communion postures…

I hate to break it to this woman but I’ve been ogled by men when I didn’t have skin exposed and the top was not tight… and was a mock turtleneck… Some men are just that way?

Tell your wife not to worry about it…just forgive this poor misguided women and let it go…

I would report this woman to the priest, as soon as possible. I was very upset when a woman at my church took it upon herself to tell me that it was “inappropriate” for a woman to wear trousers to Mass (I was wearing smart trousers, not casual ones). She handed me a leaflet (which I think she had written herself) which stated that women wearing trousers were “jezebels” and “occasions of sin” for men. I was especially humilated as, due to a disease that makes them swollen, I will not show my legs in public. I spoke to the priest and he had a “conversation” with the woman concerned.

Every parish seems to have its share of busy-bodies. Pay this woman no heed, except to mention to the Pastor that she was disturbing your wife.

I have noticed through my long life as a Catholic that, a bit like Quasimodo, every parish has its nutcase. The busy-body little old lady is the most common type. I think they are trying to carve a niche of importance for themselves in the parish because they would not be tolerated in any other social setting. They are opinionated, pushy, sometimes entering senility, and even occasionally prone to violence or outbursts.

This woman was wrong to be handing out literature not approved and authorized by the priest, and definitely wrong to do it inside the church where people presumably are praying. If you never see her again, realize it was not an insult to your wife so much as this woman’s obsessive traits. But if she does persist in coming around the church, people should make sure the priest realizes it’s a big problem.

Any other type of highly unusual behaviour should also be reported to the priest ASAP as emotionally unstable people can be attracted to the “safe” and “welcoming” environment of a church.

As for genuflecting, yes, please, keep up that beautiful custom which has such profound meaning…even if the rest do not! (IMHO).

as well as in the early Church.
Myth but lets say that it was true…

I wonder why those who claim to wish to restore Catholic practise to that of the Early Church refuse to take it to its full extent? Communion in the hand… and sitting outside of the church building in a sack-clothe and ash-stained cheeks for seven years penance?

Before you enter your pew if you can see a Tabernacle genuflect toward it, thats if your physically capable of genuflecting.

You are allowed to receive communion in the hand, though I would advise you not to.
If I were you I would get in the communion line and before receiving communion genuflect towards your Lord. Then either standing or kneeling receive your Lord and God on the tongue. THIS IS THE NORM OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Look to the example of our Holy Father: Communion kneeling and on the tongue.

I personally don’t kneel for communion at a Novus Ordo Mass but it up to you whether you wish to or not.

very good. Let us remeber that reconciliation was only given/ received once. It was a public confeesion as well as public penance and it was for over a year or more. How many people signing up for that earliest practise as well.

Oh yeah Baptizism were done in the nude. That would make for a interesting Easter vigial.

Mass was held in catacombs surrounded by the bodies of the dead and you stood the whole time.

Arnold, Arnold, Arnold,

Promethius,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the concerns and I do agree with you since you started off by saying “Arnold, Arnold, Arnold.” LOL I can almost hear the tone of voice you were using which is very understandable.

Now, Liturgy Police was a bit sarcastic if I might say. Although I do understand your point in me not worrying about other people and what they are doing, however If I may use this example. Wasn’t St. Paul addressing “abuses” in the church in Corinth? If I recall correctly, he was addressing alot of things they were doing wrong and trying to get them to stop it. And on top of this, he was a apostle of Jesus Christ in which this case was given the authority to preach and that did include visiting Corinth to set them straight in their methods of worship during mass.

Now,…the same could be said of the lady passing out theses fliers…perhaps she too was addressing issues like St. Paul was. But St. Paul addressed ALL those in the congregation not individuals, if memory serves correct.

Promethius don’t get me wrong you are correct in saying that i shouldn’t worry about it, but if I feel that God is urging me to speak up on what I feel are “abuses” shouldn’t I look to St. Paul’s example? Anyway, thank you Promethius for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I do appreciate it very much. God Bless you Brother 😃
