I’ve only done a little bit of reading about the early church, mainly just Paul Johnson and Henry Chadwick (right now I’m trying to focus all my energy on *Theology and Sanity *by Frank Sheed), but two things have always stuck out in my mind about early Christianity and concerned me about it:
- It seems that the vast majority of Christians in the apostolic and sub-apostolic ages believed that Christ’s second coming was right around the corner. Why? Wouldn’t Christ have made it clearer to the apostles that His return wouldn’t be for a long time?
- Why did so many, or at least a significant percentage, of the early Christians believe that no serious sins could be remitted after baptism?
