I have just read on www.news.va that during the Eighth general congregation this evening, the Cardinals are going to be voting on the date of the upcoming Conclave! Fr. Federico Lombardi was quoted as saying that the Conclave could begin early next week

=billcu1;10444054]Has a date been set for the conclave. I have read the sistine chapel has been shutdown and there has been 3 gregations but I’m not clear if there has been a conclave date set yet. Is the US’s Donald Wuerl and Timothy Dolan at the vatican yet?

I see the conclave begins March 12th. This may be the shortest interregnum in church history.
 
Yes, but the Cardinals did wait to have all voting members present before deciding to move up the date. With modern means of travel and communication it is so much easier for the Cardinals to arrive on time - and to let the others know if something is detaining them. The last two to arrive had things they needed to do at home before they could leave. There may not be direct flights from Vietnam to Rome, but Cardinal Pham still only took a day to travel once he was able to leave his home diocese.

Will the new pope then be revealed immediately? I didn’t come into the church until Benedict xvi emeritus was already pope.
 
Im new too, been here about a week so far. The Cardinals will need a 3/4 vote for a single person at a vote. There will be one vote tomorrow evening at the start of the Conclave and then two on each subsequent day. One in the morning, One in the afternoon. There are two stoves in the Sistine Chapel, the one pushes chemicals into the smoke to make it white.

When the vote is over the Cardinals will burn the election slips, as you already know black for no white for yes. As soon as the white smoke appears everyone waits for the bells. If the bells start ringing then its 45 minutes until habemus papam. I think its a short waiting period after that when the new pope makes his first address to those in St Peter’s Square.

So do we know if there are translators in the Conclave? Or is it indeed a matter of the Cardinals helping each other since there are so many multilinguisted ones.

There are no translators, but like you have thought, enough of them are multilingual and can help…

But it’s not like there is a lot of talking going on. In the conclave, they are voting and praying with very little discussion
 
So who are the frontrunners if anyone. Ive said in the past Cardinal Arinze as he has the passion and knowledge but its been said he is too old for the papacy now though I still think he would make a valuable contribution.

So in that case I am going to go with Angelo Bagnasco. Timothy Dolan is another possibility although I agree in this case he is too young plus he has only been a cardinal for about a year.

When are they going to try again? I’ve heard after 7 days they take a break but the norm is about 3 days.

Welcome to the forum. A few fraternal corrections to the above:
  1. A candidate needs two-thirds, rather than three-fourths, of the cardinals’ vote.
  2. There will be four, rather than two votes after the first day: Two in the morning, and two in the evening.
